Amateur, Avant-Garde, or Underground? Gay Filmmaking at Mid-Century

November 6 @ 7:00 pm
Amateur Gay

The University of Chicago Film Studies Center presents a three-hour screening of rare and recently rediscovered films made by gay men between 1947 and 1962. The program looks beyond the familiar postwar avant-garde canon to show how home movies and ambitious amateur productions pictured same-sex intimacy, friendship, community, camp, and perseverance in the face of social rejection and legal prosecution.

The six-film lineup is Vallejo (Harold T. O’Neal, 1947), Lafcadio (Jean BĂ©ranger, 1948), In dit teken (Jan Lemstra and Piet Henneman, 1949), Camille (Jerett Robert Austin, 1953), Last Spring (François Reichenbach, 1954), and Always on Sunday (James Crabe, 1962). Curator Hugo LjungbĂ€ck introduces the program.

The screening runs Friday, November 6, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Logan Center Screening Room. The University lists the public among the intended audiences and directs visitors with access questions or reasonable-accommodation requests to contact the event organizer.
