Without changing anything in the text itself (pronouns, description, action, etc), how does anĀ identityĀ change the way an audienceĀ engagesĀ with a character? What does it mean for Cabaret’s Emcee to be played by a woman? For Jack Kelly to be queer? For Audrey or Seymour to be played by trans actors?
Identities hold significance, and with a backlog of many cis, often straight or straight-assumed characters, there is value in exploring and changing the narrative of musical theatre works. Whether it be for a nuanced dramatic effect or a comedic one, we want to seeĀ musical theatre gender-fuckeryĀ (and beyond) at play!
