SUMMARY:MUDRA By Shalaka Kulkarni
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary Asian-American dance artist Shalaka Kulkarni creates experiences that bridge the ancient and contemporary. In this piece featuring guest artist Yoshinojo Fujima (aka Rika Lin)\, Kulkarni illuminates a dance-theatre journey through sand\, water and the language of gestures. \nMUDRA is inspired by Shalaka’s time spent with the renowned Maureen Fleming – a Guggenheim Fellow and Fulbright Scholar. This residency was made possible through a grant through 3Arts\, a nonprofit organization that supports artists working in the performing\, teaching\, and visual arts in the Chicago metropolitan area.  \nAbout the Artists\nShalaka is trained in Bharatanatyam and Kathak styles\, working under artists Pranita Nayar\, Sandhya Desai and Nana Shineflug\, and holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. Her work explores female identity\, societal norms\, and mythic narratives through hybrid movement and storytelling. As a principal dancer and choreographer\, she has performed in India\, the U.S.\, and Europe\, including work with Kalapriya Dance Company and the Anila Sinha Foundation. She is also a founder of SurTaal\, a collective presenting hybrid Indian classical dance works. Her creative collaborations include performances in The Story of Ram (Harris Theater)\, the Fever Up series (Chopin Theater)\, Bridge Dance Festival (Links Hall)\, Chicago Danzetheatre Ensemble\, La Pocha Nostra\, Dance Chicago Festival. She has also held residencies at the Chicago Cultural Center\, High Concept Labs\, Mandala Arts\, Ragdale\, and SloMoCO (Movement and Computing Community). Learn more about Shalaka at shalakakulkarni.com or on social media @shalaka_dance.  \n  \nYoshinojo Fujima (aka Rika Lin) is an interdisciplinary artist\, dancemaker\, and Grandmaster in Fujima-style Japanese classical dance and is part of the postwar Japanese American diaspora. Her process and art springs forth from the complete immersion in traditional practice and then ‘sonar pings’ as questions\, challenges\, and then fireworks into a coalesced impression. Learn more at yoshinojo.org/ or follow on social media @fujima.yoshinojo.

SUMMARY:Red Velvet Riot and Ellis Centric Present Here: in our bodies
DESCRIPTION:This interdisciplinary cabaret production combines puppetry\, performance art\, drag and burlesque to explore the unique relationships we have to our bodies — as a whole or in parts — and to ourselves. \nRed Velvet Riot and Ellis Centric are the combined forces behind HERE: productions\, a company rooted in the belief of art as embodied imagination\, political critique\, and societal cross-examination. Since 2024\, the company has produced at the Newport Theater (HERE: at the end of the world\, HERE: in our bodies) while also creating a recurring community engagement series (HERE: together) and is currently in development for two new productions. \nUsing the stage as a medium to express\, reflect\, share\, and organize\, presented shows question social and political beliefs while building interdisciplinary cabaret performances around a central narrative. Productions weave multidisciplinary theatrical elements including original sound and video projections\, drag\, burlesque\, acrobatics\, performance art\, as well as puppetry and crafted props. \nAbout the Artists\nHere: in our bodies features performances by Derry-éire\, Ellis Centric\, Eva La Feva\, Goodie Sesso\, Hooch Mane\, OCdeez Nuts\, Red Velvet Riot\, Tender Blossom\, Tyler C. SUMMARY:The Uncanny Attic: Chapters E-H A Beautifully Gruesome Production
DESCRIPTION:The camp macabre world of Edward Gorey returns to Steppenwolf in the second installment of this absurdist dark comedy anthology told through puppetry\, clowning\, dance\, live music\, song\, animation and an unhealthy dose of death. \nCo-creators Jennifer Friedrich (Incurable Theater\, Redmoon Theater) and Bazuka Joe (Poonie’s Cabaret\, Newport Theater Camp) pay homage to Gorey’s legendary style of satire and non-sequitur storytelling with an original script inspired by moments from the artist’s life. Taking place in a mysterious attic of an abandoned Colonial house on the cape\, the story follows a cast of doomed characters through a series of not-so-random circumstances. \nPerformed by ensemble members Monsieur Bombastic\, Derry-Éire\, Lady Ve’Lush and Marla Wyrd\, this performance also features Evan Richter and Sam Hammer (Hot Clown Company)\, singer Harlie Hellfire\, poet Kost\, contortionist Dahlia Fatale and performance artist Harley Go’Lightly. Original stop motion animation by Susie Kirkwood and accompanying score by Liam Davis. Illustration and fanny puppet by Ken Gerleve.  \nThe Uncanny Attic has been featured at events through Artist Book House and is housed in the Newport Theater\, Chicago’s home for fringe\, experimental theater. SUMMARY:Steppenwolf: "Dear Steve . . . it's Allie"
DESCRIPTION:A love song to small town America from a radical leftist snowflake\,\na contextually contingent\, trans-feminine and gender-mobile father\,\na heartland boy and a cosmopolitan lady. \n  \n“Dear Steve . . . it’s Allie” is a narrative concert\, a theatrical autobiography told with songs and stories and pictures. \nWhen Allie’s evangelical cousin invites her to come back to her hometown and go to church with him\, Allie takes the opportunity to talk to Steve—on the late-night drive to his boyhood home—about the things she knows he was unable to see\, and the unseen forces that have shaped them both. In a performance that is both traditional and high tech\, Allie plays the piano and mountain dulcimer\, weaving in historic field recordings\, electronic music and symphonic samples\, as she sings\, tells stories\, and talks to Steve about the heartland boy and devoted father she watched from a distance and the life she now lives as a trans elder\, composer and artist.

SUMMARY:Steppenwolf: The Big Reveal Live Show
DESCRIPTION:Show runs August 1 – August 3 \nGlobal drag icon Sasha Velour (HBO’s We’re Here\, RuPaul’s Drag Race) brings her latest theatrical spectacular\, The Big Reveal Live Show to Chicago after sold out shows across the US and Europe. \nKnown for her emotional\, thoughtful and crowd-shaking reveals\, The Big Reveal Live Show takes things to a whole new level as Velour goes further than she ever has before. Grounded in classic theater\, the show takes on many forms over the course of 90 minutes: high-concept lip sync performances\, artful oration\, childhood film footage\, video art and more. The Big Reveal Live Show shows this superstar at her most playful and hilarious. From the show’s whip smart comedic script and side-splitting gags\, she uses comedy as a way to disarm audiences and hit them with emotional truths. SUMMARY:Gender Play\, or What You Will
DESCRIPTION:Dates May 15 – May 24 \nWill invites you to an impromptu party to celebrate their new friendship with one of the oldest and queerest playwrights of the English language—William Shakespeare! For eight nights only\, join total besties Will & Will as they reclaim the Bard’s old plays in all of their original homoerotic\, cross-dressing\, genderfluid glory. But to meet the guest of honor\, we must perform the seance again\, together. \nFollowing a wildly successful run with About Face Theatre in 2023\, Gender Play\, or what you Will returns to Chicago for another mystical journey of queer joy\, laughter\, tarot and self-discovery through the classics. \n\nThis production of Gender Play originated at and is fiscally sponsored by Indianapolis Shakespeare Company.
