SUMMARY:The Abnormal Heart
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Off-Broadway United Solo Pride Award and celebrated sold-out Hollywood Fringe run\, “The Abnormal Heart” is an unmissable solo piece by dynamic performer and writer\, Parker Mills. From pretending to be a born-again Christian to a short stint in phone sex\, and even narrowly escaping death while dressed as a gorilla\, Parker’s journey celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the idea that a heart never truly breaks\, it just gets banged up a little. \nDirected by Marilyn McIntyre and produced by Dawn Sebock. \nTrailer for the show : https://youtu.be/ELqzHXhWSZk?si=M2lSpJ7voSWDs_XV

SUMMARY:IMHO’s New Year’s Eve Party!
DESCRIPTION:The ‘P’ today stands for ‘Party\, New Year’s Eve!’ The ladies of IMHO are back in Chicago\, gay people & others\, with a brand new show! This time\, Darby and Alexis promise to keep it at a tight 90 minutes…or like…a loose 120. Let’s take that gamble together! There will be singing\, dancing sort of I mean not really\, comedy\, trauma\, and videos that YouTube called\, ‘not appropriate!’ AND you get to countdown with the ladies\, so you can watch as they beg for kisses! \nDarby Lynn Cartwright is a [redacted]-year-old drag queen with a heart of gold and arteries that her doctors have called ‘worrisome.’ She hosts a YouTube series\, ‘IMHO: The Show\,’ and podcast\, ‘IMHO: The Podcast\,’ with her best co-worker/acquaintance\, Alexis Bevels. She also hosts a podcast with her twin brother called Twinnuendo. Spoiler: they are *not* fans of their dad. Darby has a couch in front of her TV (she invented that layout)\, so she gets to lie down while she watches K-Dramas about falling in love with demons\, who are also horses\, I think? Darby lives in LA\, near Mark Hamill. She almost ran him over with her car when Luke Skywalker was Luke JAYWALKING. That’s a real story\, but the word play makes it sound fake. It’s not. He was wearing these like big\, ’80s radio headphones with an antenna. Darby has never seen a single Star Wars because she hates war and space. \nAlexis P. Bevels is a singing\, dancing\, twirling queen with a head full of air and a heart full of gold. She began her journey in musical theatre\, but didn’t want to play just one part. She wanted to be the lead and the director… and the costume designer… and the stage manager. That said\, she became a full-time drag queen! She lives in LA at the bottom of a hill\, which worries her because of mudslides. When she’s not in constant fear for her life\, she has a BOYFRIEND NOW!! You can Google it. It’s true. You can also find Alexis on the award-winning YouTube series IMHO: The Show and the awards-not-yet-winning podcast\, IMHO: The Podcast! Otherwise\, she’s probably just lying down and thinking about pogs.

SUMMARY:World AIDS Day commemoration with Wrightwood 659 and the Joffrey Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Wrightwood 659 and The Joffrey Ballet proudly announce a special World AIDS Day commemoration honoring those lost to the epidemic to be held at Wrightwood 659 (659 Wrightwood Avenue) Thursday\, December 4\, at 5:30pm. World AIDS Day\, officially December 1\, is a global movement to unite people in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Since 1988\, communities have stood together on World AIDS Day to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma and to remember lives lost. \nThe Joffrey Ballet was deeply affected during this period\, losing several remarkable artists\, including Company Founder Robert Joffrey at age 59 and his protégé Edward Stierle at just 23. Following Joffrey’s passing\, Stierle choreographed Lacrymosa and\, while on his own deathbed\, completed Empyrean. As noted in a New York Times interview\, Stierle’s dance partner observed\, “Where Lacrymosa was about death\, Empyrean is about celebration and hope.” \nThis public program will feature opening remarks by Greg Cameron\, Joffrey Ballet President & CEO; a screening of Empyrean and discussion; and a memorial segment inviting attendees to share reflections and memories of those lost to AIDS.  Tickets for this special program are complimentary with paid admission to Wrightwood 659. \nWrightwood 659 is currently mounting The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S.\, a large-scale exhibition celebrating the rich history of The Joffrey Ballet. The exhibition premiered at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in 2024\, marking the first major retrospective of the company. Drawing from the Joffrey archive\, acquired by the Jerome Robbins Dance Division in 2017 as the Library’s largest acquisition in a decade\, the exhibition offers an in-depth look at the Joffrey’s contributions to ballet in the U.S. Highlights include rare film from the original performance of the groundbreaking ballet Astarte and Anna Sokolow’s Opus 65\, as well as costumes\, props\, pointe shoes\, posters\, correspondence\, and other ephemera from the company and the life of Robert Joffrey. The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S. is organized by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and curated by Dr. Julia Foulkes with assistance from Nicole Duffy. It is presented at Wrightwood 659 by Alphawood Exhibitions. \n  \nAlso on view at Wrightwood 659 through December 20\, 2025\, are Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, which examines the legacy of Scott Burton (1939–1989)\, an American original whose wide-ranging practice anticipated many of the strategies of today’s art; and Ellen Altfest: Forever\, an intimate selection of oil paintings by the American representational painter.

SUMMARY:Scott Burton: Shape Shift
DESCRIPTION:Scott Burton: Shape Shift examines the legacy of Scott Burton (1939–1989)\, an American original whose wide-ranging practice anticipated many of the strategies of today’s art. Hailed as a landmark exhibition when it premiered at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis\, MO\, Scott Burton: Shape Shift is the most comprehensive exhibition of Burton’s work ever mounted in the United States. Featuring works from the 1960s to 80s\, the exhibition underscores the breadth of the artist’s vision. By the time of his death at the age of 50 from an AIDS-related illness\, Burton had functioned as sculptor\, public artist\, performance artist\, choreographer\, art critic\, and exhibition curator. The survey spans Burton’s career\, featuring nearly 40 sculptures\, more than 70 photographs and ephemera\, and the only known extant video of the artist’s performance work. In conjunction with Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, Wrightwood 659 will host several public programs. These include a performative-meditation on Burton’s practice\, care\, and passing time by artist Gordon Hall\, the founder of the Center for Experimental Lectures; and a lecture jointly hosted with the Art Institute of Chicago by David J. Getsy\, author of Queer Behavior: Scott Burton and Performance Art and preeminent scholar on Burton’s artistic practice. Scott Burton: Shape Shift is organized by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation\, St. Louis\, and curated by Jess Wilcox\, independent curator\, and Heather A. Smith\, Assistant Curator\, Pulitzer Arts Foundation. The exhibition is presented at Wrightwood 659 by Alphawood Exhibitions.

SUMMARY:The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity\, 1869-1939
DESCRIPTION:The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity\, 1869-1939 explores a sea change in how society regarded homosexuality in the wake of the coining of the term “homosexual” in 1869. Before this watershed moment\, same-sex desire marked something you did\, not necessarily something you were. The First Homosexuals examines how\, for the first time\, homosexuals were cleaved from the rest of the population and given an identity which turned on their sexuality. Since the invention of the “homosexual\,” sexuality has become totalizing\, determining who you are at your core. A little over two years ago while still in the midst of the global pandemic\, Wrightwood 659 offered a taste of this upcoming exhibition’s approach and scope in a small preview entitled The First Homosexuals: Global Depictions of a New Identity\, 1869-1930. \nRuns May 2 – July 26\, 2025

SUMMARY:Out and Proud: A Rainbow Icon Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Two shows: June 19 and June 20 \nCelebrate Pride with Melissa Young and Nick Sula as they return with Young’s historical hit\, OUT AND PROUD: A Rainbow Celebration. Sixteen years ago\, Young performed the music of the World’s most loved LGBTQ Icon’s to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots\, June 28\, 1969 and now returns to celebrate the progress our country has made with help from some of her friends! Dan Riley will join Young and Sula this time around. \nStarting with Stonewall and Judy Garland\, Young will follow the LGBTQ++ Rights timeline\, matching Icons to significant moments in history. Dolly Parton’s Light of the Clear Blue Morning in 1977 aligns with Anita Bryant and the S.O.C.\, Bette Midler’s Do You Wanna Dance & Sylvester’s You Make Me Feel aligns with a post Stonewall New York (1971-73) of Bathhouses and Gay owned Discos. The creation of the Pride flag 1979/80 and Diana Ross’ I’m Coming Out! Young’s passion for history and where the movement is today comes across with laughter\, heart and great love. Young’s been seen all around town at Davenports\, Hydrate\, the Park West\, 3160 and Drury Lane Water Tower and out of town at The Dunes Resort\, Don’t Tell Mama in NYC\, The Duplex NYC and The Stonewall Inn. \nThe Den Theatre and comedy club is pleased to host Out and Proud: A Rainbow Icon Celebration on June 19-20\, 2025 at 1331 N. SUMMARY:Grace Jones and Janelle Monáe
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: QUEEN! at the Carousel in collaboration with Metro/smartbar \nGrace Jones–the trailblazing icon of music\, fashion\, and film–takes the Ravinia stage for the first time this summer\, delivering a mesmerizing performance that defies genre and expectation. Throughout her career\, the multi-talented artist has woven music across styles\, bringing together disco\, new wave post-punk\, art pop\, industrial\, reggae\, and gospel\, creating “a tight sound that is distinctly hers” (Vice). Rolling Stone celebrates her remarkable influence\, writing\, “So many performers are said to be larger than life\, but the show biz cliché has never been truer than it is for Grace Jones.” \nJones is joined by Janelle Monáe–a trailblazer in her own right\, making her own Ravinia debut–whose innovative spark has led to success in music and film\, with ten Grammy nominations and performances in Glass Onion\, Harriet\, and Hidden Figures. NPR described her 2015 protest song “Hell You Talmbout” as “visceral” and “blistering\,” highlighting its powerful message against racial violence\, and Rolling Stone praised her 2013 album The Electric Lady\, highlighting Monáe’s “sheer force of freakadelic will and a radical feminist’s sense of self-exploration.”
