SUMMARY:Art Gallery Opening - Center On Halsted - August 7\, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception featuring art by James Schenck on our 2nd floor and Erica Holman on our 3rd floor. Read artist statements below: \nJames Schenck (he/him): Flower Power \nJames Schenck’s newest series of flower drawings considers the connections between the body\, the bloom\, and the page. Drawn on newsprint with marker and gesso\, the works transform familiar floral forms into portraits—studies of vulnerability\, resilience\, and care. \nFor Schenck\, flowers are more than symbols of beauty. Like bodies\, they age\, bruise\, flourish\, and fade. The newsprint itself becomes an extension of this metaphor. Delicate and ephemeral\, the paper yellows over time\, recording its own passage through the world. Together\, flower\, body\, and page become interconnected vessels\, each carrying traces of experience\, memory\, and transformation. \nWorking from his personal archive and photographic references\, Schenck creates images that hover between observation and remembrance. Layers of marker and luminous gesso obscure and reveal forms\, echoing the ways we preserve\, revisit\, and reinterpret our own histories. The resulting drawings celebrate the beauty found not in permanence\, but in attention—the ways living things thrive when tended\, cared for\, and allowed to evolve. \nErica Holman (she/her) \nI am always observing people\, places\, and especially nature as I move through my life. Strongly contrasting elements and themes catch my eye and draw me in. Something rusty inside a lush garden\, water droplets splashing off scratchy concrete\, or shiny materials woven into a mixed-media piece—these are the kinds of details I enjoy exploring and playing with in my photography and artwork. \nThis creativity evolved through my professional work as an early childhood teacher\, where I brought art\, exploration\, and collaboration into my classrooms. Now I continue my journey of joy and discovery by working with photography\, watercolors\, acrylics\, and many other mixed-media materials. My work seeks to capture joyful\, playful exploration and a deep connection with the world around me. I am very happy to share it with you! \nFee\nFree (donations are accepted)

SUMMARY:Dream Devis: The Death and Life Of
DESCRIPTION:Dream Devis\, Chicago’s trans femme South Asian collective\, return to Steppenwolf after their sold-out eponymous show last year. Join our Devis for an existentialist romp through time\, history\, mythology and pop culture through song\, dance and comedy. \nDream Devis: The Death And Life Of centers and celebrates women at the margins of their own stories via a decidedly queer\, camp lens on the big questions of life (and death). \nThis new work uses a short story by the legendary polymath Rabindranath Tagore\, known widely as the greatest man of Indian letters\, as the creative springboard for a fantastical exploration of mythology\, literature and history. Tagore’s heroine Kadambini\, caught between the world of the dead and the living\, becomes a witness to the subversion of famed victims\, notorious villainesses and controversial icons. \nThe Dream Devis\, an ensemble of South Asian queer and trans femme artists and performers led by noted Chicago drag queen and artist Abhijeet (@bon_abhijeet) and writer-performer Saleha Salam/Leha As The Salamander (@thesalamanderchicago) and featuring Shruthi Kannan of the beloved local Bollywood-punk band Do The Needful (@dtnchicago)\, portray these women in a series of vignettes of visual spectacle in an evocation of the South Asian theatrical tradition of folk variety shows. \nTHE ARTISTS\nAbhijeet\nLeha As The SalamanderShruthi Kannan\nMasala Sapphire\nGulabi Sapphire\nDJ RIYA RIYA \n@dream.devis

DESCRIPTION:Brave Space Alliance’s Dignity Dash 5K fundraiser returns this year to make the statement that trans people have always been and will always be here; and we will not just survive\, but thrive. \nThis is more than a race — it’s a movement. \nJoin us in “Thriving Through the Finish Line.” \nThe Dignity Dash is not just about running\, it’s about being in community and showing up loud\, proud\, and exactly as we are. The Dash is about taking up space and refusing to allow our vibrant existence to be denied. This year\, BSA’s Dignity Dash is raising funds to stock our Dignity Suite with identity-affirming resources of all kinds\, including new binders and packers\, wigs and hair packs\, and gender-affirming surgery care packages. \nWe’re taking strides toward a future where trans people are supported beyond just being seen and building a world of Brave Spaces like ours. \nWe are committed to making this event accessible to everyone. If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate\, please contact: troyt@bravespacealliance.org
