SUMMARY:Dream Devis: The Death and Life Of
DESCRIPTION:Dream Devis\, Chicago’s trans femme South Asian collective\, return to Steppenwolf after their sold-out eponymous show last year. Join our Devis for an existentialist romp through time\, history\, mythology and pop culture through song\, dance and comedy. \nDream Devis: The Death And Life Of centers and celebrates women at the margins of their own stories via a decidedly queer\, camp lens on the big questions of life (and death). \nThis new work uses a short story by the legendary polymath Rabindranath Tagore\, known widely as the greatest man of Indian letters\, as the creative springboard for a fantastical exploration of mythology\, literature and history. Tagore’s heroine Kadambini\, caught between the world of the dead and the living\, becomes a witness to the subversion of famed victims\, notorious villainesses and controversial icons. \nThe Dream Devis\, an ensemble of South Asian queer and trans femme artists and performers led by noted Chicago drag queen and artist Abhijeet (@bon_abhijeet) and writer-performer Saleha Salam/Leha As The Salamander (@thesalamanderchicago) and featuring Shruthi Kannan of the beloved local Bollywood-punk band Do The Needful (@dtnchicago)\, portray these women in a series of vignettes of visual spectacle in an evocation of the South Asian theatrical tradition of folk variety shows. \nTHE ARTISTS\nAbhijeet\nLeha As The SalamanderShruthi Kannan\nMasala Sapphire\nGulabi Sapphire\nDJ RIYA RIYA \n@dream.devis

SUMMARY:SMILEY
DESCRIPTION:Open Space Arts is proud to present SMILEY by Guillem Clua\, a sharp\, funny\, and deeply relatable queer romantic comedy that has captivated audiences around the world. \nOriginally premiering in Barcelona\, SMILEYquickly became a breakout success in Spain\, enjoying extended runs in Barcelona and Madrid and earning widespread acclaim. Since its debut\, the play has been produced internationally across Europe and Latin America\, with productions in Germany\, Italy\, Greece\, Cyprus\, Chile\, Puerto Rico\, Peru\, and beyond. \nWhile SMILEY has become a global audience favorite\, it has had only limited exposure in the United States\, with select Spanish-language productions in New York and Miami. Open Space Arts’ production introduces this internationally celebrated work to Chicago audiences\, offering a fresh opportunity to experience one of the most engaging contemporary queer love stories to emerge from the European stage. \nWhen ÁLEX leaves a voicemail for his ex\, it lands in the inbox of BRUNO—a stranger. What begins as a wrong message turns into an unexpected connection between two very different men. As texts turn into calls\, and calls into something more\, they navigate attraction\, vulnerability\, and the complicated reality of modern love. \nFunny\, fast\, and disarmingly honest\, SMILEYexplores the thrill and risk of connection in a world shaped by screens\, expectations\, and the fear of being truly seen. \nGuillem Clua is one of Spain’s most widely produced contemporary playwrights\, whose work has been staged internationally and translated into multiple languages. His plays\, including SMILEY and THE SWALLOW\, are known for their emotional intelligence\, wit\, and insight into the complexities of human connection. \nOpen Space Arts continues its commitment to bold\, intimate storytelling that centers queer lives and voices with SMILEY\, a play that reflects the company’s ongoing exploration of connection\, identity\, and the evolving nature of love.

SUMMARY:Nervous Breakdown in G Minor
DESCRIPTION:How do you pursue an art form you love when you no longer feel you belong? In this solo show with live music\, Lewis Rawlinson traces his journey through queerness\, addiction and mental health. Nervous Breakdown in G Minor is a lyrical autobiography about growing up Mormon in Montana\, training as a classical cellist and confronting the realities of pursuing a life in music. \nLewis interweaves storytelling with a live performance of a four-movement cello sonata\, a turbulent work that mirrors his path from discovery and joy through doubt and collapse to rebirth. The result is a raw exploration of identity and a reclamation of narrative—seeking a more honest\, and ultimately universal\, connection to music. \nNervous Breakdown in G Minor recently completed a critically acclaimed run at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. The show was also the recipient of a 2023 Chicago DCASE Grant and was performed at The Den Theatre and Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre. \nTHE ARTISTS \nWritten and performed by Lewis Rawlinson\nPiano performed by Mo Xo\nDirected by Stephanie Rogers\nDeveloped with Arlene Malinowski
