Earthworm squats in no-man’s land beside his only friend\, desperate to cross the river border and begin a new life. Hummingbird hides in a boarded-up apartment\, secretly reading books with a fugitive teacher who will do anything to keep both her — and the resistance — alive. Armadillo stands alone in her police armor searching for justice\, or perhaps forgiveness. Which of them will make it to Paradise and what will it cost? The month-long festival of shows will kick off with a special “afternoon tea” edition of the Full Moon Vaudeville\, this concert launches the festival on Sunday\, Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. at Facility Theatre\, 1138 N. California Ave.\, headlined by art/folk/cabaret act The Crooked Mouth and other special guests.  \nSince its inception in 1989\, as a single weekend of shows in the Wicker Park neighborhood\, this unique and mutable fringe festival has expanded and contracted to fit the time and has become the longest running Fringe Festival in Chicago. Festival events will take place at four venues this year: Facility Theatre\, 1138 N. California Ave. in Humboldt Park (Full Moon Vaudeville only); Chicago Dramatists\, 798 N. Aberdeen St. in River West\, The Labyrinth Club\, 3658 N. Pulaski Rd. in the Irving Park neighborhood and Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble\, 1650 W. The Metropolis production is directed by original American cast member Lillian Castillo\, and music directed by Carolyn Brady. \nIn a now-abandoned theme park not so long ago\, six teenagers hurtled to their death on the roller coaster The Cyclone. Now\, those teens are back from the afterlife\, with all of their unlived dreams\, potential\, hopes\, and fears in tow. They grapple with the lives they led on Earth and the choices they made – all except a mysterious and headless girl named Jane Doe\, who has no memory of her past. As instructed by a fortune-telling machine named The Amazing Karnak\, the teens need to decide who amongst them will receive the gift of returning to their life. As they fight to be the one to return\, they realize that life’s ups and downs\, tragedies and victories\, love and loss are all just part of the ride. \nAn added bonus to the Metropolis production features Director Lillian Castillo. Castillo is the original “Constance” on the world premiere cast recording. Clark St. \nWrite Club Chicago returns to Chicago Tuesday\, Oct. 20 with its infamous “bout” format\, in which three rounds of combatant writer-performers face off with original\, seven-minute essays on competing topics to win prize money and claim the cherished Loving Cup of Deathless F***ing Glory. The October 20 list of combatants are Breon Arzell\, Christopher Bigelow\, Elizabeth Gomez\, Archy Jamjun\, Jean Marie Koon and Binkey Tolefree. Winners are decided by the audience following each “bout.” \nWrite Club Chicago\, initially founded by Ian Belknap and Lindsay Muscato\, is the world’s foremost competitive reading series\, featuring the most audacious and fearsome of writers and performers. The evening offers quick\, crafted performed essays: an immediate art form that takes audiences on a seven-minute ride they will not forget.
