SUMMARY:Crowned: A Completely Serious Search for a 10?
DESCRIPTION:Crowned: A Completely Serious Search for a 10? is a playful\, over-the-top tribute to the time-honored tradition of the beauty pageant\, just with more sparkle\, louder cheers\, and way fewer rules. \nHosted by the hilarious and wildly talented Meatball\, this all-gender competition features 10 contestants vying for the crown across three categories: Runway Presentation\, Q&A\, and Talent. It’s a little bit classic pageantry\, a little bit chaotic fun\, and a whole lot of heart. \nA panel of celebrity judges and community leaders\, including Emmy winning makeup artist Laila McQueen\, Chicago drag legend and King of Drag judge Tenderoni\, the “Very Demure” Tiktok sensation Jools Lebron\, Joli Robinson\, CEO of Center on Halsted\, and Troy Taylor\, Development Manager at Brave Space Alliance will score the contestants and bring their own sparkle to the stage. The audience gets in on the action too\, with the chance to vote for Fan Favorite by donating to their favorite contestant’s fundraising page. Because at the heart of all the fun\, Crowned is a fundraiser supporting the vital work of LGBTQIA+ organizations throughout the Chicagoland area. \nWhether you’re coming to cheer on a friend\, celebrate queer joy\, or just enjoy a night that doesn’t take itself too seriously\, Crowned promises a show full of camp\, charisma\, and community spirit. \nAbout Stonewall Sports Chicago:\nStonewall Sports Chicago is a volunteer-led nonprofit that creates inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals through low-cost recreational sports leagues and community events. As part of the national Stonewall Sports network\, our mission is to foster connections\, promote wellness\, and give back to organizations that serve and uplift our community. \nSince 2014\, we have grown to over 2\,500 active members and donated more than $750\,000 to LGBTQIA+ causes in the Chicagoland area.

SUMMARY:Sharon Hayes: RICERCHE: FOUR
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed artist Sharon Hayes presents Ricerche: four\, an expansive and deeply moving two-channel video composed from interviews with LGBTQ+ elders across the United States. The final installment in her decade-long series exploring sexuality and gender in the US\, the work draws inspiration from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1963 film Comizi d’Amore (Love Meetings)\, in which the filmmaker interviewed Italians about their shifting views on sex and sexuality. Adopting a similar structure\, Hayes invites participants to reflect on their experiences of desire\, identity\, community\, activism\, and survival—modeling listening and dialogue as radical tools for intergenerational connection and collective understanding. As LGBTQ+ lives come under increasing political fire\, Ricerche: four is an insistent reminder of the galvanizing force of shared testimony and the mobilizing potential of community.

SUMMARY:Scott Burton: Shape Shift
DESCRIPTION:Scott Burton: Shape Shift examines the legacy of Scott Burton (1939–1989)\, an American original whose wide-ranging practice anticipated many of the strategies of today’s art. Hailed as a landmark exhibition when it premiered at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis\, MO\, Scott Burton: Shape Shift is the most comprehensive exhibition of Burton’s work ever mounted in the United States. Featuring works from the 1960s to 80s\, the exhibition underscores the breadth of the artist’s vision. By the time of his death at the age of 50 from an AIDS-related illness\, Burton had functioned as sculptor\, public artist\, performance artist\, choreographer\, art critic\, and exhibition curator. The survey spans Burton’s career\, featuring nearly 40 sculptures\, more than 70 photographs and ephemera\, and the only known extant video of the artist’s performance work. In conjunction with Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, Wrightwood 659 will host several public programs. These include a performative-meditation on Burton’s practice\, care\, and passing time by artist Gordon Hall\, the founder of the Center for Experimental Lectures; and a lecture jointly hosted with the Art Institute of Chicago by David J. Getsy\, author of Queer Behavior: Scott Burton and Performance Art and preeminent scholar on Burton’s artistic practice. Scott Burton: Shape Shift is organized by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation\, St. Louis\, and curated by Jess Wilcox\, independent curator\, and Heather A. Smith\, Assistant Curator\, Pulitzer Arts Foundation. The exhibition is presented at Wrightwood 659 by Alphawood Exhibitions.

SUMMARY:Joffrey Ballet: Carmen
DESCRIPTION:Runs September 18 – 28\nFrom the choreographer of the critically acclaimed Frankenstein\, the Joffrey presents the U.S. premiere of Liam Scarlett’s Carmen\, a tale of love\, betrayal\, and defiance set within the gritty confines of a cigarette factory in 1930s Spain. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmid the chaos of a nation on the brink of civil war\, the uncompromising and seductive Carmen\, who insists on loving whom she chooses\, meets Don José\, whose consuming devotion ignites a blaze of passion and peril. \nIn this adaptation of Bizet’s opera\, Scarlett brings new intensity to a performance that pulsates with life—and ends in tragedy. With striking designs by Jon Bausor and Scarlett’s signature focus on evocative storytelling\, Carmen commands the stage into a tempest of desire and destruction\, revealing the timeless story of a woman who dares to live on her own terms. \nDo not overpay for Joffrey tickets! Beware of ticket resellers offering overpriced or invalid tickets. The Joffrey is the only official seller with the best prices\, available at joffrey.org.

SUMMARY:The Boy Kingdom / El reino de los varones by Achy Obejas
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to celebrate Achy Obejas and her new book The Boy Kingdom / El reino de los varones. Joining her for this reading and conversation is journalist Natalie Moore. \nPlease note: Masks are required for our in-person events. This event is free to attend\, but registration is required. \nJust in time for Hispanic Heritage Month comes another brilliant bilingual poetry collection by Achy Obejas–a meditation on being a queer mom to two sons. \nThese 44 prose poems\, artful yet accessible\, presented in both Spanish and English versions\, immerse us in the boy kingdom that Achy Obejas inhabits with her two sons. They move from the wild and divine spirit of boyhood to the everyday rhythms of family life—mac’n’cheese\, television\, sick days home from school. \nAchy carries multiple identities: she is Cuban American\, lesbian\, and Jewish. She captures the universality of motherhood while also illuminating the uniqueness of her queer\, multilingual\, multicultural family: the way her elder son looks as her as if she’s “dancing with the dead” when she speaks Spanish; the way her boys prefer mac’n’cheese to tostones; the day her elder son comes home from school disquieted\, then finally spills it: “A couple of boys yelled at him: Your moms are queer!” \nThe collection is divided into four parts. The first part focuses primarily on Achy’s sons\, and subsequent parts branch out into stories of her parents\, her roots in Cuba\, and her divorce.
