Chicago Public Library’s Bezazian Branch and the LGBTQ+ Intergenerational Dialogue Project invite you to a panel discussion full of hope\, joy\, experience\, and personal stories. We will bring together racially\, socioeconomically\, and gender diverse cohorts of LGBTQ+ college students and older adults (60+) for a night of themed dialogues\, and personal reflection on what it means to be transgender. The project began with a simple question: what might we learn about our own experiences through deep conversations with those younger or older than us? Specifically\, what might we learn about what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community in the past\, present\, and future? Story-telling will be the focus of this intergenerational dialogue. We will spend the first hour of the program listening to folks talk about their personal experiences ending with a Q&A session. This powerful performance reframes the legend of “La Llorona” through a deeply human lens—illuminating the often-overlooked struggles of postpartum depression and maternal mental health. Rooted in the Mexican folktale of Maria—a grieving mother doomed to wander in sorrow—La Llorona reimagines the myth with empathy and cultural insight. \n \nChoreographer Julianna Rubio Slager\, a Mexican American artist and mother of three\, draws from her own lived experience to ask: What if Maria had received help? What if her pain had been understood instead of condemned? “Maria is not a ghost story to me—she’s a woman under pressure\,” says Slager. “This ballet gives her back her voice. It gives all of us language for something that’s too often buried in silence.”\n \nThis one-afternoon-only performance is followed by an optional talkback panel featuring artists and mental health professionals\, offering space for reflection and dialogue. The event is part of a broader community engagement initiative with Latina women’s groups\, postpartum health advocates\, university departments\, and cultural organizations throughout the south suburbs.

SUMMARY:An evening of poetry with Rosa Lane and Stephen Haven
DESCRIPTION:Rosa Lane will read from her 4th poetry collection\, Called Back\, a title memorializing the last two words Emily Dickinson wrote. Her poems give voice to the LGBTQ+ dimension of one of America’s greatest poets\, which draws from most recent research by Dickinson scholars. Pulitzer finalist Henri Cole had this to say about Called Back: “What marvelous\, feral\, eccentric\, sweetly erotic poems [that]…illuminate–with electrifying language –the shadows of human love.” Stephen Haven will read from his latest work\, The Flight from Meaning\, which contains meditations on American History\, on the nature of religion in our time\, and on racism and its legacy in the post-Civil Rights era. T. R. Hummer in praise of Stephen’s work had this to say: “Stephen is a poet of incisive discipline deployed in the service of a passionate\, humanistic ethos.”

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 16 at The Mart\nArt for Life Chicago is a juried art auction and social art event of the season\, showcasing the talents of emerging artists alongside those of established creators. \nThis event offers a chance to bring together emerging artists with established artists\, art buyers\, and art collectors. Each year\, we select a jury panel of highly accomplished interior designers and gallery owners who bring years of industry expertise and a genuine commitment to supporting the art world. Each artist is scored\, and the top artists are invited to participate in the year’s Art for Life Chicago art auction. \nArtists who choose to donate their pieces will have their work displayed and auctioned both virtually and in person during an enjoyable evening filled with cocktails\, food\, networking\, and excitement. \nArt for Life Chicago not only creates meaningful opportunities for artists\, but with all proceeds from AFLC benefiting our Excellence in Care Grants Program\, it also helps us raise essential unrestricted funds for local organizations providing care for those living with and/or impacted by HIV/AIDS. \nAdditionally\, the top three artists are invited to DIFFA Chicago’s Three for Life event the following autumn. This opportunity includes a one-night-only exhibition for these three rising artists to showcase their artwork at a downtown Chicago gallery. This intimate art show is promoted not only to DIFFA’s cultivated list of art and event lovers but also shared with local art professional establishments to ensure widespread awareness and promotion for the artists and the event.
