SUMMARY:Author Event: Erik Piepenburg with Monica Eng
DESCRIPTION:Join author and New York Times journalist\, Erik Piepenburg for a conversation about his latest book\, Dining Out: First Dates\, Defiant Nights\, and Last Call Disco Fries at America’s Gay Restaurants! Erik will be in conversation with Chicago reporter\, Monica Eng! \nFrom a New York Times journalist\, a culinary tour of gay restaurants—their history\, and how they evolved as a space of safety and celebration for the LGBTQ+ community—full of joy\, sex\, sorrow\, activism\, and nostalgia. \nDining Out explores how gay people came of age\, came out\, and fought for their rights not just in gay bars or the streets\, but in restaurants. From cruisy urban cafeterias of the 1920s to mom-and-pop diners that fed the Stonewall generation to the intersectional hotspots of the early 21st century. Using archival material\, original reporting and interviews\, and first-person accounts\, Erik Piepenburg explores how LGBTQ restaurants shaped and continue to shape generations of gay Americans. \nThrough the eyes of a reporter and the stomach of a hungry gay man\, Dining Out examines the rise\, impact and legacies of the nation’s gay restaurants past\, present\, and future\, connecting meals with memories. Hamburger Mary’s\, Florent\, a suburban Denny’s queered by kids: Piepenburg explores how these and many other gay restaurants\, coffee shops\, diners\, and unconventional eateries have charted queer placemaking and changed the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement for the better.

SUMMARY:Heightened Scrutiny screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY follows Chase Strangio\, ACLU attorney and the first out trans person to argue before the Supreme Court\, as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth (L.W. v. Skrmetti). \nThe film exposes the dangerous role of mainstream media in fueling anti-trans legislation\, uncovering how biased coverage drives hate\, endangers lives\, and threatens democracy itself. With insights from journalists like Jelani Cobb\, Lydia Polgreen\, and Gina Chua\, and activists like Laverne Cox\, the story dismantles anti-trans disinformation and highlights its devastating real-world impact. \nWith the dangerous SCOTUS decision upholding the ban on life-saving healthcare\, HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY is an urgent call to action against bigotry and injustice.

SUMMARY:Panel: LGBTQ+ Intergenerational Dialogue Project
DESCRIPTION:Let’s connect! Chicago Public Library’s Bezazian Branch and the LGBTQ+ Intergenerational Dialogue Project invite you to a panel discussion full of hope\, joy\, experience\, and personal stories. We will bring together racially\, socioeconomically\, and gender diverse cohorts of LGBTQ+ college students and older adults (60+) for a night of themed dialogues\, and personal reflection on what it means to be transgender. The project began with a simple question: what might we learn about our own experiences through deep conversations with those younger or older than us? Specifically\, what might we learn about what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community in the past\, present\, and future? Story-telling will be the focus of this intergenerational dialogue. We will spend the first hour of the program listening to folks talk about their personal experiences ending with a Q&A session. If you’re interested in learning\, allyship\, connecting with your neighbors\, and fostering love and acceptance\, this is the place for you! \nThis program is designed for adults 18+ and will be held in person. \nAccessibility\nNeed sign language interpretation or other accessibility assistance for this event? Please call (312) 747-8184 or email access@chipublib.org to request accommodations. Requests must be made at least 14 business days before the event.
