SUMMARY:Film Screening: TURA!
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Public Library’s Harold Washington Library Center will host a screening of the documentary TURA!\, about the life of pioneering Asian American burlesque performer\, dancer and cult film star Tura Satana on Friday\, May 29 in the Cindy Prtizker Auditorium. \nLead actor in John Waters’ favorite film\, Faster\, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!\, Satana faced incredible odds as a Japanese American woman growing up in post-World War II Chicago but became a cultural icon and entertainment innovator by sheer force of will. Please join us for a celebration of the life and work of a remarkable woman who literally kicked down the doors of pop culture and whose story serves as a wonderful bridge between the AANHPI and Pride month festivities.

SUMMARY:Chicago Repertory Ballet's Spring Series
DESCRIPTION:MAY 29 – 31 | RUTH PAGE CENTER FOR THE ARTS\nREPERTORY INCLUDES:\nTHE RITE OF SPRING – WADE SCHAAF\nWORLD PREMIERE – YANIS ERIC PIKIERIS\nWORLD PREMIERE – WADE SCHAAF\nJoin Chicago Repertory Ballet for an exhilarating Spring Series that celebrates repertory\, reinvention\, and bold new voices. Anchoring the our Spring Series is the remounting of Founding Artistic Director Wade Schaaf’s The Rite of Spring\, set to Igor Stravinsky’s watershed score. \nCRB has not performed this ballet since its striking 2021 presentation on Crickett Hill\, and we are thrilled to bring this monumental work to the stage at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts. Drawing inspiration from the Ballets Russes era while infusing it with CRB’s contemporary classical sensibility\, Schaaf’s Rite is visceral\, ritualistic\, and theatrically charged — a work that honors tradition while boldly reinterpreting it for today’s audiences. \nThe program also features a world premiere work by choreographer Yanis Eric Pikieris. Known for his sweeping physicality and intricate musicality\, Pikieris crafts movement that is both architecturally precise and emotionally expansive. His choreography demands virtuosity while revealing the humanity of the dancer — an arresting combination that has quickly distinguished his voice. \nAlso on the program is a world premiere by Founding Artistic Director Wade Schaaf. Schaaf’s work has been described as “musically sophisticated and dramatically immediate\,” blending structural rigor with an unflinching theatrical instinct. This new creation continues their exploration of contemporary classical form\, pushing the company’s artists both technically and expressively. \nDo not miss these exciting works including the Chicago premiere of Miami based choreographer Yanis Eric Pikieris!

SUMMARY:Curious Theatre Branch Presents Revival of “Talking About Godard\,” May 29 - June 28
DESCRIPTION:Curious Theatre Branch\, launches its 38th Season\, with the revival of Talking About Godard\, written by Beau O’Reilly and directed by Beau O’Reilly with Briavael O’Reilly\, May 29 – June 28\, at Facility Theatre\, 1138 N. California Ave. \nIn Talking About Godard\, three restless artists live awkwardly together. Helen chain smokes\, has sex with whomever and talks straight. Mary Barnes is obsessed with the films of Jean Luc Godard and is determined to make her own Godard film in Super 8. A neighborhood thug named Leon helps Chrissy by stealing suitcases from O’Hare and adds to the spoils of the household. Then a French caller comes looking for love. The play examines female friendship and cohabitation in the 90s\, the artistic process and how groups do and don’t satisfy our needs. \nTalking About Godard was originally produced by The Curious Theatre Branch in 1996 and its cast included Jenny Magnus (Helen)\, Vicki Walden (Mary Barnes) and Paul Leisen (Leon)\, who repeat their original roles in this revival. New cast members include Kristin Garrison (Chrissy) and Jayita Bhattacharya (Leon). \nThe performance takes place Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. The running time is currently 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are priced on a “pay what you can” scale\, with a suggested price of $25. For more information about Talking About Godard visit CuriousTheatreBranch.com.

SUMMARY:City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago
DESCRIPTION:City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago is an intergenerational group exhibition that highlights Chicago’s essential\, yet often underacknowledged\, role in the story of queer art and activism. The exhibition examines this history from the mid-1980s\, when activists radically mobilized in response to the US government’s disastrous handling of the AIDS crisis. In this moment of change\, activists reclaimed the historically pejorative epithet “queer” as a liberatory term\, encompassing all who purposefully deviate from heteronormative society. Drawn from the MCA’s collection and other local collections\, City in a Garden follows this paradigm shift in LGBTQ+ history by bringing together work from over 30 artists and collectives working in Chicago from the 1980s to the present. \nThese artists address queerness through diverse media and methods: documenting clandestine queer spaces in photographs\, creating sculptures that challenge normative depictions of gender and sexuality\, and exploring queer intimacy through drawings\, paintings\, and videos. City in a Garden also features archival materials related to groups who innovatively combine artistic practices with their activism. The exhibition takes its title from Chicago’s official motto\, Urbs in Horto\, which translates to “city in a garden.” In the context of this presentation\, this motto speaks to the exhibited artists’ and activists’ utopian visions of a metropolitan sanctuary for people of all races\, genders\, and sexualities. As queer people continue to fight for their lives and livelihoods under ongoing and renewed political threats\, these visions remain as urgent today as ever. \nRuns July 5\, 2025 – May 31\, 2026

SUMMARY:MASPALOMAS
DESCRIPTION:MASPALOMAS is a luminous\, sensual drama set in the sun-drenched freedom of Gran Canaria\, where desire\, reinvention\, and queer community flourish in open defiance of age and expectation. The next Chicago premiere from the QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL\, the film offers a rare and deeply moving portrait of queer life later in life. \nAt its center is a 76-year-old man who has built a world defined by pleasure\, independence\, and self-expression—embracing the rhythms of Maspalomas with unapologetic vitality. But when that fragile sense of freedom is disrupted\, the past he once escaped begins to close in. Family ties\, buried truths\, and unresolved histories resurface\, forcing him to confront not only where he came from\, but who he still has the courage to be. \nCritics have praised the film’s emotional honesty and sensuality\, highlighting its tender\, unflinching look at desire and aging\, and its refusal to look away from the complexities of queer identity later in life. The performances—especially by José Ramón Soroiz—have been noted for their depth and vulnerability\, grounding the film in a lived-in authenticity that resonates long after the final scene. \nWhat unfolds is both intimate and expansive: a story of longing\, resilience\, and the radical act of choosing oneself—again and again. At once sensual and deeply human\, MASPALOMAS explores the complexities of identity across generations\, asking what it truly means to live authentically when time\, memory\, and desire collide.
