SUMMARY:Transcendent Souls IV
DESCRIPTION:Transcendent Souls IV is an all-cello concert of works by trans composers that explore the intersection of transness and spirituality. Often described as the instrument most similar to the human voice\, the cello offers a beautiful but imperfect imitation\, profound expression mediated by the body that produces it. This tension rhymes with religious and trans experience: the immortal soul in a mortal body\, the self reaching toward what it might become. \nJoin us for a concert of works by Ahmed Alabaca\, Lily Koslow\, Jadie Reeves\, Rina Sawayama\, Ari H. Scott\, and Asher Sizemore performed by a flock of trans cellists! Thanks so much to Fourth Presbyterian Church for welcoming us into their space\, and to the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for their generous support. \nFree Admission (RSVP) • Sensory-Friendly • Masks Encouraged

SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: May 23 Sex and Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:It’s IML weekend\, and to commemorate this week is all about the ways Queer people use sex to rebel. Lauren Berlant and Michael Warner argue that society’s insistence on keeping sex private and personal perpetuates the idea that straight\, cishet lives are the norm. So this week we’re going to explore the ways that queer lives were made public in the past. Learn about Cruising in the 1870s\, Lesbian hangouts from prohibition that revolutionized Jazz\, and the first major protest against Anita Bryant\, along with other sexy sites of Queer joy from the past.\nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. Tours are conducted by Daniel Williams\, a political science professor who’s been bringing the details of Chicago’s queer past to life on social media. Follow him on Instagram @Daniel.Edward.Williams \nWhen: Saturday\, May 23\, 1 pm\nStart: Bank of America Building Plaza (110 N Wacker Dr on the North Side)\nEnd: 2nd Story Bar (157 E Ohio St #2)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nAll walking tours are free\, with tips gratefully accepted\, but not expected.

SUMMARY:Jibz Cameron: Hell in a Handbag
DESCRIPTION:A freaks freak\, artist Jibz Cameron\, best known for her multimedia alter ego Dynasty Handbag\, on her new memoir “Hell in a Handbag” \nQueer performance artist Jibz Cameron\, best known for her multimedia alter ego Dynasty Handbag\, heads to Chicago for an evening of performance\, film\, and readings celebrating the debut of her memoir. Entitled Hell in a Handbag\, the book traces Cameron’s unique perspective shaped by a childhood spent with hippie clowns in Northern California\, to making morbid zines as a teen in the East Bay punk scene\, to in-your-face experiences of misogyny in New York City’s avant-garde theater scene. By turns both frank and funny\, Cameron addresses the impact of addiction and mental illness in her life\, as well as her mother’s suicide\, in a candid account of her journey. This personal narrative culminates in the birth of Dynasty Handbag\, and her gutting commentary on contemporary life. In a first\, both Jibz Cameron and Dynasty Handbag will appear each evening to tell the story of these intimately intertwined halves of one iconic individual. \nPlease note: This program contains mature content including mentions of suicide and self-harm.

SUMMARY:Q Force: May Q Salon
DESCRIPTION:If you’re frustrated by our country’s crawl towards authoritarianism\, you’re not alone. Unfortunately\, America is not unique in its struggle against wannabe dictators and authoritarians. People across the globe have been resisting authoritarians for centuries. \nAnd\, thankfully\, many of them have succeeded and left behind lessons for us to learn and implement here in the US. \nWhat are those lessons? That’s what we’re discussing in our next salon. Retired judge\, activist\, Political Science professor\, and Q Forcer Jim Snyder will lead us through recent successes in resisting illiberal and authoritarian states\, what lessons we can learn from their resistance\, and how we can implement them here at home. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, May 26 at the Annoyance Theatre for: We Aren’t Alone: Lessons From Those Who Have Resisted Authoritarians And Won. \nAs always\, doors will open at 6pm and we’ll start the meeting at 6:30pm.

SUMMARY:Bolingbrook Pride Month Proclamation
DESCRIPTION:Bolingbrook doesn’t just talk about supporting their LGBTQ+ residents. They’ve put it in writing. Their policy manual and social services regulations now explicitly protect gender identity\, sexual orientation\, and reproductive health decisions. That’s real. That’s rare. And it deserves a room full of people saying thank you. \nCome celebrate the reading of the Pride Month Proclamation at the Village Board Meeting on Tuesday\, May 26th! \nArrive at Bolingbrook Village Hall (375 W. Briarcliff) by 7:15 pm so we can sit together as a community. The meeting begins at 7:30\, and the proclamation is early on the agenda. \nWear your brightest Pride colors. Bring your friends\, your family\, your neighbors. Let’s pack that room\, make some noise (respectfully!)\, and make it clear that this community is watching\, grateful\, and showing up.

SUMMARY:Chicago Repertory Ballet's Spring Series
DESCRIPTION:MAY 29 – 31 | RUTH PAGE CENTER FOR THE ARTS\nREPERTORY INCLUDES:\nTHE RITE OF SPRING – WADE SCHAAF\nWORLD PREMIERE – YANIS ERIC PIKIERIS\nWORLD PREMIERE – WADE SCHAAF\nJoin Chicago Repertory Ballet for an exhilarating Spring Series that celebrates repertory\, reinvention\, and bold new voices. Anchoring the our Spring Series is the remounting of Founding Artistic Director Wade Schaaf’s The Rite of Spring\, set to Igor Stravinsky’s watershed score. \nCRB has not performed this ballet since its striking 2021 presentation on Crickett Hill\, and we are thrilled to bring this monumental work to the stage at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts. Drawing inspiration from the Ballets Russes era while infusing it with CRB’s contemporary classical sensibility\, Schaaf’s Rite is visceral\, ritualistic\, and theatrically charged — a work that honors tradition while boldly reinterpreting it for today’s audiences. \nThe program also features a world premiere work by choreographer Yanis Eric Pikieris. Known for his sweeping physicality and intricate musicality\, Pikieris crafts movement that is both architecturally precise and emotionally expansive. His choreography demands virtuosity while revealing the humanity of the dancer — an arresting combination that has quickly distinguished his voice. \nAlso on the program is a world premiere by Founding Artistic Director Wade Schaaf. Schaaf’s work has been described as “musically sophisticated and dramatically immediate\,” blending structural rigor with an unflinching theatrical instinct. This new creation continues their exploration of contemporary classical form\, pushing the company’s artists both technically and expressively. \nDo not miss these exciting works including the Chicago premiere of Miami based choreographer Yanis Eric Pikieris!
