SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History: Police\, Gangsters\, and Gay Bars
DESCRIPTION:The University of Chicago sociologist Ernest Burgess observed that the city contains “zones of transition” that sat between areas of the city with clearly defined purposes and which people often used for activities which society frown upon. These areas were often the places that fomented queer culture in the industrial city – but that required an interaction between queerness and other criminal behavior. Learn about the delicate interaction between queerness\, the state’s monopoly on legitimate violence\, and organized crime as we investigate the delicate negotiations and compromises required to keep queer institutions open in the city in the 20th century.

SUMMARY:MCA: Prime Time | City in a Garden
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to celebrate with Queen! at the MCA. Smartbar’s legendary LGBTQ+ party—now more than a decade old—takes over the museum for a special evening of DJs\, drag queens\, dancing\, and more in support of the exhibition City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago. Get ready to work your body and your mind as you experience premier Chicago music and art. \nKicking off the night at 7 pm is Brendan Fernandes’s The Rite (2019). In this durational performance\, dancers Laura Baumeister and Katlin Bourgeois activate Fernandes’s artwork\, featured in City in a Garden\, while improvising within the parameters of Fernandes’s choreography. \nIn addition\, Gerber/Hart—whose extraordinary collection of LGBTQ+ holdings is one of the largest in the world—showcases ephemera from historical LGBTQ+ Chicago\, bringing queer-themed board games like Gay Monopoly\, and is readying other surprises for the night. Also joining the evening is LGBTQ+ Intergenerational Dialogue Project\, who is creating conversations across the past\, present\, and future of queer Chicago. \nCheck out all of the exhibitions on view\, commemorate the evening with a picture from the photo booth\, enjoy a drink from the bar\, and even get something bedazzled! \nPrime Time is an after-hours series that taps into the creative pulse of Chicago with an eclectic mix of live music\, performance art\, film screenings\, and interactive programs that transform the museum in spectacular ways. The series is an electrifying social experience created with artists and key cultural groups in the city.

SUMMARY:Transcendent Souls II
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second Transcendent Souls concert of works by queer\, trans\, and nonbinary composers! This program riffs on the structure and atmosphere of the Bach Cello Suites combined with the sound of the human voice. Lily Koslow’s Posthaste is an abstraction of the First Suite Minuets\, while Andrew Norman’s For Ashley plays with the hypnotic nature of the Fourth Suite Prelude. Two works by Benjamin T. Martin reference sacred themes and borrow from early sacred music\, and the composer will join for the performance of their Two Sacred Songs for tenor and cello. \nMany thanks to Grace Episcopal Church for welcoming us to their Summer Concert Series! \nFree Admission • Sensory-Friendly • Masks Encouraged

SUMMARY:You Will Get Sick
DESCRIPTION:A young man with a secret. An older woman who will listen. A predatory flock of birds. An upcoming audition for The Wizard of Oz. Welcome to You Will Get Sick\, a wildly imaginative new play that traces the hilarious and deeply moving saga of one man’s illness and his unlikely caretaker’s pursuit of her dreams. \nAdmired as “lively\, surreal and surprising” by the New York Times\, Noah Diaz’s Chicago debut is equal parts buddy-comedy\, form-bending experiment and sober meditation on mortality.

SUMMARY:Ada Cheng: Queer Asian Play Reading: The Trouble with My Hair
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago and Nothing Without a Company proudly present the play reading of Ada Cheng’s solo performance. \nThe Trouble with My Hair\, by storyteller and solo performer Ada Cheng\, is an intimate exploration of gender and sexual identity and boundary-making through her evolving relationship with her hairstylist and her hair. Blending narrative art and theatrical storytelling\, Ada Cheng playfully brings her audience on a journey of self-discovery and self-love through her struggles with hair. This play reading will be followed by a talkback\, hosted by Anna Rose Ii-Epstein\, co-founder of Nothing Without a Company. They will delve into the play’s themes\, Ada’s creative process\, and the broader landscape of queer women’s storytelling in theatre. This event is free to all.
