SUMMARY:City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago
DESCRIPTION:City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago is an intergenerational group exhibition that highlights Chicago’s essential\, yet often underacknowledged\, role in the story of queer art and activism. The exhibition examines this history from the mid-1980s\, when activists radically mobilized in response to the US government’s disastrous handling of the AIDS crisis. In this moment of change\, activists reclaimed the historically pejorative epithet “queer” as a liberatory term\, encompassing all who purposefully deviate from heteronormative society. Drawn from the MCA’s collection and other local collections\, City in a Garden follows this paradigm shift in LGBTQ+ history by bringing together work from over 30 artists and collectives working in Chicago from the 1980s to the present. \nThese artists address queerness through diverse media and methods: documenting clandestine queer spaces in photographs\, creating sculptures that challenge normative depictions of gender and sexuality\, and exploring queer intimacy through drawings\, paintings\, and videos. City in a Garden also features archival materials related to groups who innovatively combine artistic practices with their activism. The exhibition takes its title from Chicago’s official motto\, Urbs in Horto\, which translates to “city in a garden.” In the context of this presentation\, this motto speaks to the exhibited artists’ and activists’ utopian visions of a metropolitan sanctuary for people of all races\, genders\, and sexualities. As queer people continue to fight for their lives and livelihoods under ongoing and renewed political threats\, these visions remain as urgent today as ever. \nRuns July 5\, 2025 – May 31\, 2026

SUMMARY:MASPALOMAS
DESCRIPTION:MASPALOMAS is a luminous\, sensual drama set in the sun-drenched freedom of Gran Canaria\, where desire\, reinvention\, and queer community flourish in open defiance of age and expectation. The next Chicago premiere from the QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL\, the film offers a rare and deeply moving portrait of queer life later in life. \nAt its center is a 76-year-old man who has built a world defined by pleasure\, independence\, and self-expression—embracing the rhythms of Maspalomas with unapologetic vitality. But when that fragile sense of freedom is disrupted\, the past he once escaped begins to close in. Family ties\, buried truths\, and unresolved histories resurface\, forcing him to confront not only where he came from\, but who he still has the courage to be. \nCritics have praised the film’s emotional honesty and sensuality\, highlighting its tender\, unflinching look at desire and aging\, and its refusal to look away from the complexities of queer identity later in life. The performances—especially by José Ramón Soroiz—have been noted for their depth and vulnerability\, grounding the film in a lived-in authenticity that resonates long after the final scene. \nWhat unfolds is both intimate and expansive: a story of longing\, resilience\, and the radical act of choosing oneself—again and again. At once sensual and deeply human\, MASPALOMAS explores the complexities of identity across generations\, asking what it truly means to live authentically when time\, memory\, and desire collide.

SUMMARY:THE WAY A BODY GLOWS: New Work by Jessie Mott (OPENING RECEPTION June 4)
DESCRIPTION:THE WAY A BODY GLOWS: New Work by Chicago artist Jessie Mott\nJoin us on Thursday\, June 4th from 6pm-8pm for the opening of The Way a Body Glows\, a new exhibition by Jessie Mott\, curated by Vasia Rigou. \nWhere: Chicago Athletic Association: 12 S Michigan Ave\, Chicago\, IL 60603\nWhen: JUNE 4 from 6-8PM OPENING RECEPTION and Jessie’s New Work will be up THROUGHOUT the PRIDE Month of June! \nhttps://www.hyattexperiences.com/unbound-collection/chiub#!/e/the-way-a-body-glows-opening-reception-19a084ad/ \nCelebrate the opening of Jessie Mott’s new art exhibition\, The Way a Body Glows\, which will be on view in our 2nd floor display cases June 2nd through July 31st. Join us for an opportunity to meet the artist and curator while enjoying complimentary refreshments at the North Fireplace in the Drawing Room. \nAbout the Exhibition\nJessie Mott’s creatures rarely arrive as one thing. They slip between animal\, spirit\, portrait\, apparition\, and self. In The Way a Body Glows\, Mott presents four large-scale drawings that bring these hybrid beings into a nocturnal world of washy skies\, saturated color\, and charged intimacy. \nIntertwined forms\, impossibly long limbs\, an insect-like femme figure\, and a close-up portrait of a dik-dik-inspired creature appear as proud\, radiant presences. They are strange but tender\, fantastical but familiar\, fierce without losing their softness. In Mott’s hands\, the body becomes a site of invention: stretched\, winged\, scaled\, luminous\, and defiantly alive. \nThese new works extend the artist’s long-standing interest in the unstable borders between human and animal\, desire and vulnerability\, power and play. Here\, queerness is not treated as a theme to be decoded\, but as a force of transformation—one that reshapes bodies\, kinships\, and ways of being seen. These beings do not ask permission to exist. They hold the room with color\, humor\, elegance\, and unmistakable presence. \nAbout the Artist and Curator\nJessie Mott is a visual artist based in Chicago. Using an array of media such as painting\, drawing\, and animation\, she gives life to creatures that negotiate permeable boundaries. Mott’s work has been exhibited widely\, most recently at Goldfinch Gallery in Chicago\, and with Diane Christiansen at Hawthorn Contemporary in Milwaukee\, WI; with queer scholar and writer Chantal Nadeau at the Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago; and collaborative animations with artist and writer Steve Reinke\, including International Film Festival Rotterdam\, VIDEOEX International Experimental Film & Video Festival in Zürich and the Whitney Biennial in New York City. Mott has also participated in numerous art residencies\, group and solo shows throughout the United States and abroad. Mott received a B.S. from New York University and an MFA from the department of Art Theory & Practice at Northwestern University. She can be found online at jessiemott.com and on Instagram at @jessiemott. \nGreek-born Vasia Rigou is writer\, editor\, and curator exploring visual art\, culture\, architecture\, and design. She is the editor of Newcity\, Chicago’s leading culture publication\, and regularly contributes to Chicago Reader\, Artnet News\, and international magazines OnOffice and ICON. In her curatorial practice\, she explores themes of identity\, intimacy\, and belonging with exhibitions at the Chicago Artists Coalition—where she was awarded the HATCH curatorial residency—the Swedish American Museum\, the Design Museum of Chicago\, the Chicago Athletic Association\, the Museum of Danish America\, and other venues. Her traveling exhibition Lay Of(f) the Land is on view at the Ostrobothnian Museum in Finland before heading to Sweden in spring 2026. Her work can be found at rigouvasia.com and on Instagram @vasiarigou.

SUMMARY:Fundraiser for Florida House Candidate Felipe Sousa Lazaballett
DESCRIPTION:Join us in support of Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet for Florida House District 42\nWe need fighters like Felipe in the Florida House — leaders who aren’t afraid to take on Florida Republicans who are tearing people down and ripping away our freedoms. \nAs an LGBTQ+ immigrant\, Felipe came to this country at fourteen in search of opportunity\, and experienced firsthand the same challenges many Floridians face today. He overcame barriers to education\, health care\, and economic stability but still faces discrimination as both an immigrant and member of the LGBTQ+ community. \nFelipe has overcome enormous hurdles — and all along the way\, he’s helped lift up others facing the same struggles. That’s the kind of fighter we need in Tallahassee — someone ready to lower costs\, raise wages\, and and provide an opportunity for everyone to thrive together. \nJoin us on June 5th\, 2026\, in Chicago for an evening hosted by the following friends to help send Felipe to the Florida House! \nThe event is hosted in a private residence in the Uptown neighborhood. The address will be sent upon RSVP.
