SUMMARY:Considering Matthew Shepard: Staged Choral Production
DESCRIPTION:Consonance revisits Craig Hella Johnson’s oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard in what would have been Matthew Shepard’s 50th birthday year—a powerful and deeply relevant work that invites reflection\, compassion\, and remembrance. This staged production of the powerful oratorio reflects on the life and legacy of Matthew Shepard\, a 21-year-old college student in Wyoming who was murdered in October of 1998 in a hate crime because he was gay. His death became a national turning point\, sparking conversations about anti-LGBTQ+ violence that eventually led to federal hate-crime legislation bearing his name. \nConsidering Matthew Shepard is a three-part oratorio\, in which composer Craig Hella Johnson wove together texts from Hildegard of Bingen\, Rumi\, poets Michael Dennis Browne and Lesléa Newman\, Matt’s own journal entries\, his parents’ words\, and news reporting from 1998 into a single work that moves across a wide range of musical styles. The result isn’t one voice telling one story. Instead\, it’s many voices layered together: a medieval mystic\, a contemporary poet\, a grieving family\, a newspaper account\, all held inside the same piece. Since its 2016 premiere (ten years ago exactly) it’s been performed by hundreds of choirs around the world. Through music that is both intimate and profound\, this work invites us to remember\, to reflect\, and to recommit ourselves to dignity\, understanding\, and love. \nAfter the performances\nA talkback session will follow each performance with Matthew Shepard hate crime historian and LGBTQ+ advocate Greg R. Baird. He has over 30 years experience as a civil rights speaker and educator\, and is the executive producer of a documentary on Matthew’s story. It’s a chance to keep the conversation going once the music ends.

His death became a national turning point\, sparking conversations about anti-LGBTQ+ violence that eventually led to federal hate-crime legislation bearing his name.\nConsidering Matthew Shepard is a three-part oratorio\, in which composer Craig Hella Johnson wove together texts from Hildegard of Bingen\, Rumi\, poets Michael Dennis Browne and Lesléa Newman\, Matt’s own journal entries\, his parents’ words\, and news reporting from 1998 into a single work that moves across a wide range of musical styles. Through music that is both intimate and profound\, this work invites us to remember\, to reflect\, and to recommit ourselves to dignity\, understanding\, and love.\nAfter the performances\nA talkback session will follow each performance with Matthew Shepard hate crime historian and LGBTQ+ advocate Greg R. Baird. He has over 30 years experience as a civil rights speaker and educator\, and is the executive producer of a documentary on Matthew’s story. It’s a chance to keep the conversation going once the music ends.

SUMMARY:Tin Drum Theatre Company Presents the Chicago Premiere\, “A Dark Wood\,” October 15 - November 1
DESCRIPTION:Tin Drum Theatre Company announces the Chicago premiere of A Dark Wood\, October 15 – November 1\, written by Eric Coble and directed by Steve Needham\, at Studio 44 in the Greenhouse Theater Center\, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. \n“The Fix” was supposed to correct everything that had gone wrong with the country. Now\, three members of a shattered family\, Earthworm\, Hummingbird and Armadillo\, occupy different corners of a society in free-fall\, each surviving in their own way. Earthworm squats in no-man’s land beside his only friend\, desperate to cross the river border and begin a new life. Hummingbird hides in a boarded-up apartment\, secretly reading books with a fugitive teacher who will do anything to keep both her — and the resistance — alive. Armadillo stands alone in her police armor searching for justice\, or perhaps forgiveness. Which of them will make it to Paradise and what will it cost? Does such a place even exist? \nA Dark Wood ensemble cast includes Renzo Vicente (he/him\, Earthworm)\, Delaney Vallese (she/her\, Hummingbird)\, Marlee Feacher (she/her\, Armadillo)\, Carlos Andrés Mai (he/they\, Montrose)\, Shannon Leigh Webber (she/her\, Miss Vivian)\, and Raúl Alonso (he/him\, Dipper)\, Eric Hinkle (he/him\, U/S Earthworm)\, Bryce Ranee (she/her\, U/S Hummingbird)\, Anika Flores (she/her\, U/S Armadillo)\, Dimitri Marinakos (he/him\, U/S Montrose)\, Renae Stone (she/her\, U/S Miss Vivian)\, and Michael Stejskal (he/him\, U/S Dipper). \nThe performance schedule is Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m.\, Saturdays at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. The Understudy Performance is Saturday\, Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m. There will be a post-show talk-back with playwright Eric Coble after a select performance date\, to be announced.
