SUMMARY:Center on Halsted Art Gallery Opening October 2
DESCRIPTION:Art Gallery Opening\nFriday\, October 2nd 2026\n6:30 PM – 8:30 PM\nPresented By\nCenter on Halsted\nLocation\n3656 N Halsted Street\nChicago\, IL\nGet Directions\nDescription\nJoin us for the opening reception featuring paintings by Jeanette Diaz on our 2nd floor and Jeff Thiede on our 3rd floor. The exhibition opens October 2 from 6:30–8:30 PM and will remain on view through November 29. \nJeanette Diaz (she/her)\nChicago native Jeanette Diaz is an artist whose work lives between observation and intuition. Educated in Fine Art Photography and design at Columbia College Chicago\, she approaches portraiture as a personal meditation on beauty\, one shaped by emotion rather than realism. Self taught\, she is influenced by classic painters known for their fearless use of color. Her work carries echoes of the Fauvist spirit and projects emotional intensity through a vibrant\, expressive palette.\nWorking primarily in oil and oil pastel at mid scale to large formats\, Diaz creates richly layered paintings that offer a contemporary interpretation of the portrait tradition. Her work explores storytelling and beauty\, drawing from docudrama style photographs of her lived experiences. These images serve as the foundation for subjects often placed in intimate domestic settings\, where she dissolves the boundary between the real and imagined through a lens that shifts between figuration and semi abstraction.\nAt the intersection of photography and painting\, Diaz translates photographic moments onto canvas with the sensitivity of a painter. She begins by documenting meaningful experiences through her camera\, then reimagines and personalizes them in oil paint\, allowing each piece to evolve into a process of self reflection and discovery. Her practice is driven by a deep love of color and its capacity to hold emotional weight and psychological resonance.\nFollow @iamjeanettediaz on Instagram and Twitter. \nJeff Thiede (he/him)\nJeff Thiede paints dreamlike images as creative solutions to the problems that confront him. He designs images by creating photo collages that combine his photographs into surreal scenes before translating them to canvas in oil paint.\nThiede’s paintings show a sharp instinct for composition and light\, carried over from his training shooting film. He approaches painting much as he approaches design\, constructing striking\, cinematic images with vibrant colors. He also maintains an ongoing practice of painting his plants as a way of marking time and testing new techniques. \nFee\nFree or a donation to the Center on Halsted

SUMMARY:Kate McKinnon Live in Conversation in Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Friday 2nd October 2026\nCahn Auditorium\, Evanston  \nOne of the funniest\, most shape-shifting performers of her generation\, live on stage.\nKate McKinnon spent a decade on Saturday Night Live becoming one of the most decorated cast members in the show’s history: ten Emmy nominations\, two wins\, and a catalogue of characters that lodged themselves permanently in the cultural memory. Hillary Clinton. Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Rudy Giuliani. Weird Barbie. \nOff screen\, she’s proven just as hard to categorise. Novelist\, voice actress\, comedian\, children’s author with a #1 New York Times bestselling series: she has built a body of work that refuses easy summary\, animated throughout by the same sensibility. Her Millicent Quibb series\, following three peculiar sisters and their mad scientist mentor through increasingly chaotic adventures\, has found readers of all ages who recognise something of themselves in its celebration of the brilliantly strange. \nKate joins us for a wide-ranging conversation about a life spent making people laugh\, the craft behind character work\, and what it means to keep finding new forms. An unmissable evening with one of America’s most beloved comedic voices.

SUMMARY:The Seance: A Victorian séance. Live on stage.
DESCRIPTION:A Victorian séance. Live on stage. \nThe Séance is an original stage show that recreates an authentic Victorian-era séance. We investigate the history\, tell the stories of the participants\, and demonstrate the exact techniques used by psychics and mediums who claimed to contact the dead. \nIt’s a time machine — we’re taking you back to the heyday of the séance. \nTonight\, you will learn exactly how a séance was performed. \n—— \nWhat it’s NOT: The Séance is not an “actual” séance\, nor is it a cheesy ghost tour. We perform live demonstrations and tell stories based on the real history of early-1900s séance shows. \nA spook-house show for the smart set.

SUMMARY:The Witch Project
DESCRIPTION:Are you a good witch\, or a bad witch? \nClick your heels and step into The Witch Project — a spellbinding love letter dressed up as a ritual\, tracing one queer man’s obsession with a pair of ruby slippers\, and the man who rescued them from oblivion. Drawing connections between centuries of persecution and desire — from the witch trials to the AIDS crisis — the play asks what we owe the dead\, and what they leave behind for us to find. \nPart performance art\, part detective story\, part concert featuring the music of queer icons\, The Witch Project invites you into a world where memory\, myth\, and longing collide. Amidst the darkness we’re living through\, will spells save us? Is art enough? \nWritten + Performed by Alex Benjamin\nExecutive Produced by Maggie Meiners + Matt Meiners\nProduction management by Sarah Skaggs \nRunning time: Approximately 1 hour with no intermission \nDeveloped in part during residency at Ragdale Foundation. Influenced in its original production by core collaborators Sarah Skaggs\, Lucy Wirtz\, and Derek Elliott.\nPoster design by Emily Bieniek\, inspired by Silence = Death and the AIDS activist movement. SUMMARY:National Coming Out Day
DESCRIPTION:Join HRC Chicago on Thursday\, October 8\, from 6–8 PM at Level Sporting Club as we celebrate National Coming Out Day with our LGBTQ+ community and allies! \nWe’re bringing together HRC members\, community partners\, friends\, and advocates for an evening of connection\, celebration\, and storytelling. As part of HRC’s One Million Voices for Equality campaign\, community members will have the opportunity to share their stories and help put real voices and experiences at the heart of the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. \nWe’ll also look ahead to the HRC Chicago Dinner and the upcoming elections — because showing up\, speaking out\, and making our voices heard matters. \nCome celebrate who you are. Share your story. Connect with your community. And help make sure every voice counts.
