SUMMARY:The Seance: A Victorian séance. Live on stage.
DESCRIPTION:A Victorian séance. Live on stage. \nThe Séance is an original stage show that recreates an authentic Victorian-era séance. We investigate the history\, tell the stories of the participants\, and demonstrate the exact techniques used by psychics and mediums who claimed to contact the dead. \nIt’s a time machine — we’re taking you back to the heyday of the séance. \nTonight\, you will learn exactly how a séance was performed. \n—— \nWhat it’s NOT: The Séance is not an “actual” séance\, nor is it a cheesy ghost tour. We perform live demonstrations and tell stories based on the real history of early-1900s séance shows. \nA spook-house show for the smart set.

SUMMARY:The Witch Project
DESCRIPTION:Are you a good witch\, or a bad witch? \nClick your heels and step into The Witch Project — a spellbinding love letter dressed up as a ritual\, tracing one queer man’s obsession with a pair of ruby slippers\, and the man who rescued them from oblivion. Drawing connections between centuries of persecution and desire — from the witch trials to the AIDS crisis — the play asks what we owe the dead\, and what they leave behind for us to find. \nPart performance art\, part detective story\, part concert featuring the music of queer icons\, The Witch Project invites you into a world where memory\, myth\, and longing collide. Amidst the darkness we’re living through\, will spells save us? Is art enough? \nWritten + Performed by Alex Benjamin\nExecutive Produced by Maggie Meiners + Matt Meiners\nProduction management by Sarah Skaggs \nRunning time: Approximately 1 hour with no intermission \nDeveloped in part during residency at Ragdale Foundation. Influenced in its original production by core collaborators Sarah Skaggs\, Lucy Wirtz\, and Derek Elliott.\nPoster design by Emily Bieniek\, inspired by Silence = Death and the AIDS activist movement. Image not for resale.\nUsed by permission of ACT UP New York (actupny.com). \nProceeds benefit AIDS Foundation Chicago and ACT UP. \nRecommended for ages 13+

SUMMARY:Considering Matthew Shepard: Staged Choral Production
DESCRIPTION:Consonance revisits Craig Hella Johnson’s oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard in what would have been Matthew Shepard’s 50th birthday year—a powerful and deeply relevant work that invites reflection\, compassion\, and remembrance. This staged production of the powerful oratorio reflects on the life and legacy of Matthew Shepard\, a 21-year-old college student in Wyoming who was murdered in October of 1998 in a hate crime because he was gay. His death became a national turning point\, sparking conversations about anti-LGBTQ+ violence that eventually led to federal hate-crime legislation bearing his name. \nConsidering Matthew Shepard is a three-part oratorio\, in which composer Craig Hella Johnson wove together texts from Hildegard of Bingen\, Rumi\, poets Michael Dennis Browne and Lesléa Newman\, Matt’s own journal entries\, his parents’ words\, and news reporting from 1998 into a single work that moves across a wide range of musical styles. The result isn’t one voice telling one story. Instead\, it’s many voices layered together: a medieval mystic\, a contemporary poet\, a grieving family\, a newspaper account\, all held inside the same piece. Since its 2016 premiere (ten years ago exactly) it’s been performed by hundreds of choirs around the world. Through music that is both intimate and profound\, this work invites us to remember\, to reflect\, and to recommit ourselves to dignity\, understanding\, and love. \nAfter the performances\nA talkback session will follow each performance with Matthew Shepard hate crime historian and LGBTQ+ advocate Greg R. Baird. He has over 30 years experience as a civil rights speaker and educator\, and is the executive producer of a documentary on Matthew’s story. It’s a chance to keep the conversation going once the music ends.

His death became a national turning point\, sparking conversations about anti-LGBTQ+ violence that eventually led to federal hate-crime legislation bearing his name.\nConsidering Matthew Shepard is a three-part oratorio\, in which composer Craig Hella Johnson wove together texts from Hildegard of Bingen\, Rumi\, poets Michael Dennis Browne and Lesléa Newman\, Matt’s own journal entries\, his parents’ words\, and news reporting from 1998 into a single work that moves across a wide range of musical styles. Through music that is both intimate and profound\, this work invites us to remember\, to reflect\, and to recommit ourselves to dignity\, understanding\, and love.\nAfter the performances\nA talkback session will follow each performance with Matthew Shepard hate crime historian and LGBTQ+ advocate Greg R. Baird. He has over 30 years experience as a civil rights speaker and educator\, and is the executive producer of a documentary on Matthew’s story. It’s a chance to keep the conversation going once the music ends.
