SUMMARY:Conversion Therapy Dropout Chicago Release Party with Tim Schraeder Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:Join former Chicagoan Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez to celebrate the release of Conversion Therapy Dropout with a reading\, conversation and signing. A gay Christian’s behind-the-scenes account of evangelical megachurches and eight years in conversion therapy before finding wholeness and authenticity. \nTimothy Schraeder Rodriguez was an invisible architect behind evangelical Christianity’s digital empire\, crafting messages of belonging for some of the most influential megachurches–Hillsong Church\, Elevation Church\, Willow Creek–all while secretly questioning his own place within the faith. \nIn a desperate attempt to “fix” himself\, he turned to conversion therapy\, spending eight years trying to pray the gay away. And he wasn’t alone. More than 700\,000 people in the US have undergone some form of conversion therapy. Even though Exodus International\, the largest ex-gay organization\, closed in 2013\, the practice still thrives in many conservative religious communities. After years of this harmful “therapy\,” Schraeder Rodriguez’s sexuality never changed. But his faith did.The more time he spent in evangelical Christianity\, the more he witnessed the hypocrisy of institutions that claimed to love everyone while quietly pushing people like him into silence. But Schraeder Rodriguez wouldn’t remain silent. Instead\, he forged a new path\, discovering a vibrant faith beyond the constraints of non-affirming theology and finding a community that embraced his whole self. \nConversion Therapy Dropout is a behind-the-scenes look at megachurch culture\, the hidden harm of non-affirming Christian spaces\, and the ongoing impact of conversion therapy on gay Christians. This isn’t just a coming-out story–it’s about what happens after. About rebuilding a life outside the only world you’ve ever known. And the radical act of stepping into the light after being told your whole life to stay in the shadows. Sometimes\, the greatest act of faith isn’t holding on–it’s letting go. \nTimothy will be in conversation with Kathy Khang. \nFree RSVP is requested

SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: Police\, Gangsters\, and Gay Bars
DESCRIPTION:The University of Chicago sociologist Ernest Burgess observed that the city contains “zones of transition” that sat between areas of the city with clearly defined purposes and which people often used for activities which society frown upon. These areas were often the places that fomented queer culture in the industrial city – but that required an interaction between queerness and other criminal behavior. Learn about the interaction between queerness\, the state’s monopoly on legitimate violence\, and organized crime as we investigate the delicate negotiations and compromises required to keep queer institutions open in the city in the 20th century. \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. Tours are conducted by Daniel Williams\, a political science professor who’s been bringing the details of Chicago’s queer past to life on social media. \nFollow him on Instagram @Daniel.Edward.Williams\nAll walking tours are free\, with tips gratefully accepted\, but not expected.

SUMMARY:Ragbagalia Arts Fest
DESCRIPTION:As Chicago emerges from its winter burrow\, a new cultural fixture is set to bloom with a historic headlining performance. Ragbagalia\, a brand-new femme and queer arts festival\, officially announces its inaugural event for May 16\, 2026\, at Sleeping Village\, featuring the legendary ESG on their highly-anticipated “Final Dance” tour. \nFor many\, this will be the final opportunity to witness the seismic influence of ESG—a band whose minimalist funk and post-punk rhythms provided the DNA for hip-hop and house music—on a Chicago stage. Their farewell performance anchors a curated “ragbag” team of\nartists dedicated to reclaiming space for voices that deserve to be heard. “In today’s political and cultural climate\, safer\, femme-forward spaces feel more necessary than ever\,” says Tracy Evans\, Founder of Ragbagalia. “Bringing ESG’s ‘Final Dance’ to this stage is the ultimate tribute to the underground. We are pairing these icons with emerging voices to build something that is both revolutionary and a celebration of the legacy they’ve built.” \nInspired by the radical history of the Riot Grrrl movement and the space-making narratives of authors like Sara Marcus and Carrie Brownstein\, Ragbagalia disrupts the traditional festival model. The event is entirely women-led and multidisciplinary\, centering women\, femme\, queer\,\nand marginalized artists across music\, performance\, and visual art. \nAlongside ESG\, the lineup includes Chicago’s own She’s Crafty (all-female Beastie Boys tribute)\, and powerhouse acts Period Bomb\, Uniity\, and Pleeay. Rooted in the city’s supportive arts community\, Evans and co-leader Ashley Barlow (co-founder of littleHEADbutt Studios) have designed Ragbagalia to prioritize safety\, authenticity\, and accessibility. Held at the ADA-accessible Sleeping Village\, the festival emphasizes affordability\nwith an all-day ticket that includes live music and a curated pop-up gallery. In keeping with its commitment to equity\, profits from the event go directly to the participating artists\, with remaining funds donated to the festival’s primary partner\, Punk Rock Saves Lives.

SUMMARY:The John Waters Screenplays: A Reading and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and career-spanning conversation with legendary filmmaker and writer John Waters as he celebrates the new reissue of his classic early screenplays. In true icon fashion\, the reading will feature Waters voicing each and every part from a scene in one of his screenplays. \nFrom the transgressive Pink Flamingos to the joy of Hairspray — later a Tony Award-winning musical — Waters redefined independent cinema in the ’70s and ’80s with his singular blend of shock and wit. More than a filmmaker\, Waters is a literary provocateur whose humor challenged every boundary of taste and convention. This conversation explores his journey from young Baltimore filmmaker to the undisputed king of cult cinema\, honoring six of his reissued screenplays: Multiple Maniacs\, Pink Flamingos\, Female Trouble\, Desperate Living\, Flamingos Forever\, and Hairspray. \nPlus\, enter for a chance to read on stage at the event with John Waters when you purchase tickets. \nA signing will follow this event.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Advocacy Day with Equality Illinois
DESCRIPTION:Our community is under attack\, and we need your voice now more than ever. \nAcross the country\, we are seeing the rise in harmful efforts targeting LGBTQ+ people\, including renewed pushes to legitimize and expand so-called “conversion therapy\,” a practice that has been widely discredited and condemned for the lasting harm it causes. These attacks threaten the safety\, dignity\, and well-being of our community\, especially LGBTQ+ youth. \nOn May 21\, 2026\, LGBTQ+ Illinoisans and our allies will come together in Springfield to advance equality and send a clear message to our elected officials: our lives are worth protecting. We must do everything in our power to ensure Illinois remains a true sanctuary for LGBTQ+ people\, a place where everyone can live openly\, safely\, and authentically. \nJoin us and bring your friends. Share this call to action with your networks. Together we can stand strong against hate and work towards a future rooted in dignity\, justice\, and care for all.
