SUMMARY:Transquake: Hosted by Beyond X&Y
DESCRIPTION:A scientific celebration of trans joy – because baby\, we were born this way. \nIt’s time to shake things up with a TRANSQUAKE! Join us on DNA Day to celebrate the launch of Beyond X&Y\, a new educational advocacy org dedicated to fighting transphobia with the power of science and trans joy. \nThis science-themed variety hour highlights amazing local trans\, non-binary\, and queer performers\, including: \nComedians Talia Clay & LT\nDrag performances by eRiS\, Luxury D. Temptation\, Athena Red\, and Supermarket\nTalk & “experiment” with the founder of Beyond X&Y\, Dr. Jey the Science They\nCategory is: DNgAy! We encourage you to wear something celebrating DNA\, science\, or trans pride. \nMore about Beyond X&Y: \nBeyond X&Y was founded by Dr. Jey McCreight (they/he)\, a trans Genomics PhD\, science communicator\, and local Chicagoan. Our mission is to mobilize biomedical experts and allies to fight unscientific propaganda around “biological sex” that is used to attack trans and intersex people. Because we trust the real science\, and we know biology isn’t binary. \nJey accidentally kickstarted their communication career back in 2010\, with the viral moment of “Boobquake.” When a cleric claimed immodestly dressed women caused earthquakes\, Jey thought\, “Let’s test that!” That experience taught a valuable lesson: You need humor\, storytelling\, and whimsy to communicate – not just facts. \nYour attendance will help Dr. Jey test an important new hypothesis: Is trans joy as powerful as the right fears? Will our gender-bending magic cause an earthquake under Mar-a-Lago? Are Jey’s powers gone after top surgery\, or amplified? We’ll see!

SUMMARY:Chicago Jazz Philharmonics Celebrates International Jazz Day with Sketches of Spain: Revisited Concert & Conversation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of International Jazz Day\, the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic (CJP) proudly presents Sketches of Spain: Revisited\, an innovative orchestral tribute to the legendary 1960 collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans. This captivating performance will guide audiences through rich cultural textures and musical storytelling\, blending jazz\, classical\, and world music influences in a fresh and evocative interpretation. \nThe performance will take place at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts (915 E. 60th Street\, Chicago) on Monday\, April 27\, 2026 from 1 PM to 3:30 PM. \nThe Sketches of Spain: Revisited Schedule: \n1:00 PM: Sketches of Spain: Revisited\n2:15 PM: Sketches of Miles: The Conversation Continues — A panel discussion unpacking Miles Davis’s life\, legacy\, and the significance of Sketches of Spain. \nPanelists include: \n• Orbert Davis\, Emmy Award-winning trumpeter and composer;\n• Mark Ruffin\, award-winning journalist and Sirius XM Real Jazz program director; and\,\n• Vince Wilburn\, drummer\, bandleader of M.E.B.\, Miles Davis’s nephew\, and co-manager of the Miles Davis Estate \nThe conversation will be moderated by Karen Chilton\, the 2026 Library of Congress Jazz Scholar and critically acclaimed author\, Hazel Scott: The Pioneering Journey of a Jazz Pianist from Café Society to Hollywood to HUAC. This august panel of native Chicagoans features those whose work in jazz continues to impact the global music landscape. \nOrbert Davis’s journey with the iconic Sketches of Spain began in the 1990s when\, as a trumpeter with Bill Russo’s Chicago Jazz Ensemble\, he performed the challenging solo trumpet part originally played by Miles Davis. Rather than attempting to replicate Davis’s performance\, Orbert Davis embraced the spirit of improvisation and soulful expression that defined Miles’s playing. Over the years\, Orbert Davis’s interpretation has evolved\, incorporating Moorish influences\, infectious jazz grooves\, and Spanish cultural elements\, creating a vibrant and dynamic reimagining that continues to resonate with audiences today. \nFor tickets and more information\, visit www.chijazzphil.org.

SUMMARY:ON THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:ON THE SEA is a smoldering\, deeply intimate drama from Helen Walsh\, set along the wild\, unforgiving coast of North Wales—where the pull of the tide mirrors the pull of desire. The next Chicago premiere from the QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL\, the film has been praised as “atmospheric and emotionally resonant” by the BFI London Film Festival. \nJack has built his life on routine\, labor\, and silence\, working the mussel beds with a quiet resilience shaped by tradition and expectation. But when Daniel\, a younger drifter with nothing to lose\, arrives and meets Jack’s guarded world with disarming honesty\, an undeniable tension begins to surface—charged\, dangerous\, and impossible to ignore. Critics have called the film “visually striking… a powerful sense of isolation and connection” (Eye for Film)\, capturing both the stark beauty of the landscape and the emotional distance between the men. \nIn a community where masculinity is rigid and watchful eyes are everywhere\, their connection unfolds in glances\, in proximity\, in moments that feel both fleeting and inevitable. What begins as curiosity deepens into something far more consuming\, forcing Jack to confront the life he’s lived—and the one he’s denied himself. With its “quiet\, poetic filmmaking and vivid sense of place” (Film Carnage)\, the film builds a world where silence speaks as loudly as words. \nUltimately\, ON THE SEA is a story of longing\, risk\, and the quiet urgency of a love that refuses to stay buried—what Variety describes as “a windswept\, deeply felt story of love and longing.”

SUMMARY:Chicago May Day Rally & March
DESCRIPTION:This May Day\, a broad coalition of organizations are uniting for a day of action and economic power\, including this rally and march. We are taking action in solidarity with workers\, immigrants and everyone impacted the most by the Trump regime’s barbaric attacks on our rights and freedoms. \nJoin us to support these organizations for a powerful May Day in Chicago! We continue our resistance to the Trump regime by showing up on this International Workers’ Day — and every day — to fight for a better future and country that serves workers\, not billionaires\, and to demand ICE out of our communities! \nWhen workers and communities rise up together\, we fight back with more power and we will WIN! We stand with our partners at: Chicago Federation of Labor\, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights\, Chicago Teacher’s Union\, Illinois Labor History Society\, SEIU HCII and more. We’re united to demand fair wages\, safe conditions\, healthcare\, education\, voting rights\, immigrant rights\, LGBTQ+ rights\, abortion rights\, and dignity and justice for all. \nMore events and actions across the city coming soon—stay tuned for more info or go to: https://chicagomayday.org/ \nPlease note: A core principle behind all our events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. Weapons of any kind\, including those legally permitted\, should not be brought to events.

SUMMARY:Artemis Singers Spring Concert - Power in Harmony
DESCRIPTION:Why “Power in Harmony”?\nArtemis Singers\, Chicago’s Lesbian Feminist Chorus\, presents a concert that celebrates strength through connection. Power in Harmony explores the idea that true harmony is not the absence of difference\, but the intentional blending of diverse voices and perspectives. Dissonance\, when heard and recognized\, can result in stronger resolutions and lead to greater unity within a community. \nPerforming works written or arranged by women\, including several Chicago-based composers and arrangers\, Artemis Singers seeks to share with their audience the bold harmonies that reflect both the music and the resilient lesbian feminist community that inspires it. \nPreview of this Summer’s Sister Singers Network Choral Festival\nArtemis Singers is hosting over 20 choruses this July for an every-four-years choral festival bringing together feminist choruses from across the US and beyond. Choruses are assigned performance slots to perform their own sets. This May 2 concert is a preview of the set that Artemis Singers will perform on the choral festival stage. \nAdditionally\, this concert features some small ensembles as well as several pieces that will be performed this summer as part of the closing night “mass chorus” event: two performances featuring 400 singers each\, singing for social justice\, equal rights\, finding common ground\, and creating change together.

SUMMARY:Conversion Therapy Dropout Chicago Release Party with Tim Schraeder Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:Join former Chicagoan Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez to celebrate the release of Conversion Therapy Dropout with a reading\, conversation and signing. A gay Christian’s behind-the-scenes account of evangelical megachurches and eight years in conversion therapy before finding wholeness and authenticity. \nTimothy Schraeder Rodriguez was an invisible architect behind evangelical Christianity’s digital empire\, crafting messages of belonging for some of the most influential megachurches–Hillsong Church\, Elevation Church\, Willow Creek–all while secretly questioning his own place within the faith. \nIn a desperate attempt to “fix” himself\, he turned to conversion therapy\, spending eight years trying to pray the gay away. And he wasn’t alone. More than 700\,000 people in the US have undergone some form of conversion therapy. Even though Exodus International\, the largest ex-gay organization\, closed in 2013\, the practice still thrives in many conservative religious communities. After years of this harmful “therapy\,” Schraeder Rodriguez’s sexuality never changed. But his faith did.The more time he spent in evangelical Christianity\, the more he witnessed the hypocrisy of institutions that claimed to love everyone while quietly pushing people like him into silence. But Schraeder Rodriguez wouldn’t remain silent. Instead\, he forged a new path\, discovering a vibrant faith beyond the constraints of non-affirming theology and finding a community that embraced his whole self. \nConversion Therapy Dropout is a behind-the-scenes look at megachurch culture\, the hidden harm of non-affirming Christian spaces\, and the ongoing impact of conversion therapy on gay Christians. This isn’t just a coming-out story–it’s about what happens after. About rebuilding a life outside the only world you’ve ever known. And the radical act of stepping into the light after being told your whole life to stay in the shadows. Sometimes\, the greatest act of faith isn’t holding on–it’s letting go. \nTimothy will be in conversation with Kathy Khang. \nFree RSVP is requested
