What does it mean for Cabaret’s Emcee to be played by a woman? For Jack Kelly to be queer? For Audrey or Seymour to be played by trans actors? \nIdentities hold significance\, and with a backlog of many cis\, often straight or straight-assumed characters\, there is value in exploring and changing the narrative of musical theatre works. Whether it be for a nuanced dramatic effect or a comedic one\, we want to see musical theatre gender-fuckery (and beyond) at play! \nFEATURING: Essential Invisible\, Wesley Beyers\, Makenna Van Raalte\, Felicia Hinojosa \, Michael Davis Arnold\, Gina Saglimbeni \, Emely Cuestas\, Jacque Bischoff\, Reva Sangal\, Cas Lam & Rogelio Castro. \nDoors at 6pm with a one hour happy hour before the performances begin at 7pm. DESCRIPTION:An out lesbian state senator is up for re-election. Her female opponent is a moderate conservative who has aligned herself with right-wing extremists. They’re locked in a tight race in which each side caters to its base and any event can become instantaneously politicized. \nWhen a gay man is bashed with a baseball bat and left to die\, his ex-boyfriend\, a campaign aide for the incumbent senator\, is enraged. But his boss’s unwillingness to label it a hate crime tips him over the edge. Frustration and fear eventually turn to rage and he teams up with his best friend to embark on a vendetta of sabotage and more\, reasoning that if gays aren’t respected enough to win justice\, fear will achieve what good intentions and politics cannot. \nAngry Fags asks what do we do with our righteous anger? Rooted in the Mexican folktale of Maria—a grieving mother doomed to wander in sorrow—La Llorona reimagines the myth with empathy and cultural insight. \n \nChoreographer Julianna Rubio Slager\, a Mexican American artist and mother of three\, draws from her own lived experience to ask: What if Maria had received help? What if her pain had been understood instead of condemned? “Maria is not a ghost story to me—she’s a woman under pressure\,” says Slager. “This ballet gives her back her voice. It gives all of us language for something that’s too often buried in silence.”\n \nThis one-afternoon-only performance is followed by an optional talkback panel featuring artists and mental health professionals\, offering space for reflection and dialogue. The event is part of a broader community engagement initiative with Latina women’s groups\, postpartum health advocates\, university departments\, and cultural organizations throughout the south suburbs.
