SUMMARY:American Prophets: James Baldwin & Queer Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Despite James Baldwin’s disavowal of Christianity in his youth\, he continued to engage the symbols and theology of Christianity in works such as The Amen Corner\, Just Above My Head\, and others. With his new book Jimmy’s Faith: James Baldwin\, Disidentification\, and the Queer Possibilities of Black Religion\, author Christopher W. Hunt shows how Baldwin’s usage of those religious symbols both shifted their meaning and served as a way for him to build his own religious and spiritual vision. \nHunt is interviewed by Northwestern professor Ivy Wilson. Books will be available for purchase and Hunt will sign them following the program.

SUMMARY:Write That Down! An archival project capturing the particulars of our current moment
DESCRIPTION:Hello everyone! We will be celebrating the launch of Write That Down!’s Spring/Summer issue with a lakefront picnic on Sept 6\, 3pm to sunset! \nWrite That Down! is an archival project capturing the particulars of our current moment\, both here in Chicago and in the world at large. The goal is to gather everyday artifacts that tell stories about what is important to us and our communities. There is no memento too big or local story too small for these pages. If it matters to you\, write it down. \nCome celebrate the end of summer with us and pick up your free issue of the mag! \n(The address is for Hollywood Beach but we will be set up just south of the beach on the grass at “Contemplation Point.” Look for a large tent and a DJ.)

SUMMARY:Running Tour of The Girls in 3-B with Gerber/Hart Library and Archives
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Pride Month this June with a celebration of legendary pulp fiction author Valerie Taylor on this 4-mile running tour in the Gold Coast/River North/Loop area starting and ending at Vuori (1003 N Rush Street). Taking inspiration from Taylor’s novel The Girls in 3-B\, Read & Run Chicago guide Quinn Rose will stop at real-life queer hangouts from Chicago history and discuss characters from The Girls in 3-B! Following the running tour\, we’ll end at Vuori (1003 N Rush Street) for a post-run snacks and lecture with Gerber/Hart Library and Archives Community Outreach and Strategic Partnerships Manager Jen Dentel. A portion of all ticket sales will be donated to Gerber/Hart Library and Archives. \nNot planning to run? Cyclists welcome (take care of your own safety\, please!) and ticket option to attend only the lecture portion. \nAll attendees will receive a mini-zine with a self-guided version of this running tour. \nAbout The Girls in 3-B: Iconic lesbian pulp author Valerie Taylor presents the story of three small-town Midwestern girls–Annice\, Pat\, and Barby–as they move to 1950s Chicago to seek work\, love\, and independence. A subversive exploration of relationship and workplace dynamics\, The Girls in 3-B offers a perspective grounded in the limitations of 1959 but searching for a bolder portrayal of women and sexuality.

DoctorJonPaul will be joined in a podcast salon-style conversation with Anna DeShawn\, creator of E3 Radio and The Qube. \nIn Black. Fat. Femme\, DoctorJonPaul delivers an honest and extraordinary new take on how the author\, and other Black Fat Femmes like them\, have come to find and understand their identity. They explore how standing at the intersection of multiple identities\, communities\, and causes shapes people and how they see the world; through this book readers get an up-close examination of the importance of meaningful representation and how Black Fat Femmes have been excluded and erased from LGBTQ+ communities and conversations. \nAll tickets cover the cost of\, and include\, silent headpones for the listening session as well as light bites and refreshments!
