SUMMARY:MASPALOMAS
DESCRIPTION:MASPALOMAS is a luminous\, sensual drama set in the sun-drenched freedom of Gran Canaria\, where desire\, reinvention\, and queer community flourish in open defiance of age and expectation. The next Chicago premiere from the QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL\, the film offers a rare and deeply moving portrait of queer life later in life. \nAt its center is a 76-year-old man who has built a world defined by pleasure\, independence\, and self-expression—embracing the rhythms of Maspalomas with unapologetic vitality. But when that fragile sense of freedom is disrupted\, the past he once escaped begins to close in. Family ties\, buried truths\, and unresolved histories resurface\, forcing him to confront not only where he came from\, but who he still has the courage to be. \nCritics have praised the film’s emotional honesty and sensuality\, highlighting its tender\, unflinching look at desire and aging\, and its refusal to look away from the complexities of queer identity later in life. The performances—especially by José Ramón Soroiz—have been noted for their depth and vulnerability\, grounding the film in a lived-in authenticity that resonates long after the final scene. \nWhat unfolds is both intimate and expansive: a story of longing\, resilience\, and the radical act of choosing oneself—again and again. At once sensual and deeply human\, MASPALOMAS explores the complexities of identity across generations\, asking what it truly means to live authentically when time\, memory\, and desire collide.

SUMMARY:The John Waters Screenplays: A Reading and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and career-spanning conversation with legendary filmmaker and writer John Waters as he celebrates the new reissue of his classic early screenplays. In true icon fashion\, the reading will feature Waters voicing each and every part from a scene in one of his screenplays. \nFrom the transgressive Pink Flamingos to the joy of Hairspray — later a Tony Award-winning musical — Waters redefined independent cinema in the ’70s and ’80s with his singular blend of shock and wit. More than a filmmaker\, Waters is a literary provocateur whose humor challenged every boundary of taste and convention. This conversation explores his journey from young Baltimore filmmaker to the undisputed king of cult cinema\, honoring six of his reissued screenplays: Multiple Maniacs\, Pink Flamingos\, Female Trouble\, Desperate Living\, Flamingos Forever\, and Hairspray. \nPlus\, enter for a chance to read on stage at the event with John Waters when you purchase tickets. \nA signing will follow this event.

SUMMARY:ON THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:ON THE SEA is a smoldering\, deeply intimate drama from Helen Walsh\, set along the wild\, unforgiving coast of North Wales—where the pull of the tide mirrors the pull of desire. The next Chicago premiere from the QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL\, the film has been praised as “atmospheric and emotionally resonant” by the BFI London Film Festival. \nJack has built his life on routine\, labor\, and silence\, working the mussel beds with a quiet resilience shaped by tradition and expectation. But when Daniel\, a younger drifter with nothing to lose\, arrives and meets Jack’s guarded world with disarming honesty\, an undeniable tension begins to surface—charged\, dangerous\, and impossible to ignore. Critics have called the film “visually striking… a powerful sense of isolation and connection” (Eye for Film)\, capturing both the stark beauty of the landscape and the emotional distance between the men. \nIn a community where masculinity is rigid and watchful eyes are everywhere\, their connection unfolds in glances\, in proximity\, in moments that feel both fleeting and inevitable. What begins as curiosity deepens into something far more consuming\, forcing Jack to confront the life he’s lived—and the one he’s denied himself. With its “quiet\, poetic filmmaking and vivid sense of place” (Film Carnage)\, the film builds a world where silence speaks as loudly as words. \nUltimately\, ON THE SEA is a story of longing\, risk\, and the quiet urgency of a love that refuses to stay buried—what Variety describes as “a windswept\, deeply felt story of love and longing.”

SUMMARY:WE ARE PAT // screening and Q&A with filmmaker Rowan Haber
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE PAT explores the evolution of gender identity and comedy from the ’90s to the present day through the lens of the iconic Saturday Night Live sketch\, “It’s Pat.” The film examines Pat’s origins as a joke rooted in the cultural anxiety of the ’90s around gender while drawing striking parallels to today’s culture wars around transness and queerness. Trans and non-binary comedians and culture-makers reimagine and rewrite the original Pat sketches\, using camp and humor to reclaim and re-envision an iconic character in American comedy. The film explores humor as both a tool of oppression and a radical force for change. Beyond comedy\, WE ARE PAT raises complex questions: How does art age? What responsibility does a creator have as cultural values evolve? Can we reclaim narratives that once mocked us\, transforming pain into laughter\, visibility\, and ultimately\, our own creations? (Rowan Haber\, United States\, 2025\, 86 minutes\, DCP) \nFollowing the screening\, director Rowan Haber will be joined by Bel Olid (Assistant Instructional Professor in Catalan and Spanish) for a Q&A. \nDirector Rowan Haber is an aesthetically-minded Writer/Director. An MFA graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts\, they were a Sundance Momentum Fellow\, a Sundance New Frontier Lab and Art of Practice Fellow. They were featured on The Alice Initiative’s 2018 list of directors ready to helm studio films\, Indiewire’s 8 Best Trans Directors Working Today\, and have been a fellow at Yaddo\, MacDowell and UCross Artist Residencies. \nBel Olid is a writer\, translator\, Assistant Instructional Professor in Catalan and Spanish at the Romance Languages & Literatures Department and Affiliated Professor at the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality\, both at University of Chicago. SUMMARY:3670\, screening at Facets
DESCRIPTION:IN-PERSON FILM EVENT. In 3670\, a North Korean defector in Seoul quietly navigates two worlds: one shaped by exile and another by his awakening queer identity. Joonho Park’s feature debut is a moving\, understated portrait of belonging and self-discovery\, illuminating a rarely seen intersection of Korean life with grace\, empathy\, and cinematic restraint. Cheol-jun\, a young North Korean defector\, has built a fragile new life in Seoul. To his fellow defectors\, he’s a quiet\, hardworking man—yet he conceals another truth: he’s gay. Living between fear and desire\, he begins exploring Seoul’s underground queer community\, where coded messages like “3670” (“Meet at Exit 6\, Jongno 3-ga\, 7 p.m.”) mark places of connection and refuge. As Cheol-jun’s double life deepens\, he struggles to reconcile the two versions of himself—the dutiful newcomer seeking acceptance and the man craving freedom and intimacy. Park’s patient\, observational style transforms the ordinary—bus rides\, casual chats\, late-night walks—into moments of aching humanity.

SUMMARY:Heightened Scrutiny screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY follows Chase Strangio\, ACLU attorney and the first out trans person to argue before the Supreme Court\, as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth (L.W. v. Skrmetti). \nThe film exposes the dangerous role of mainstream media in fueling anti-trans legislation\, uncovering how biased coverage drives hate\, endangers lives\, and threatens democracy itself. With insights from journalists like Jelani Cobb\, Lydia Polgreen\, and Gina Chua\, and activists like Laverne Cox\, the story dismantles anti-trans disinformation and highlights its devastating real-world impact. \nWith the dangerous SCOTUS decision upholding the ban on life-saving healthcare\, HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY is an urgent call to action against bigotry and injustice.

SUMMARY:Sharon Hayes: RICERCHE: FOUR
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed artist Sharon Hayes presents Ricerche: four\, an expansive and deeply moving two-channel video composed from interviews with LGBTQ+ elders across the United States. The final installment in her decade-long series exploring sexuality and gender in the US\, the work draws inspiration from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1963 film Comizi d’Amore (Love Meetings)\, in which the filmmaker interviewed Italians about their shifting views on sex and sexuality. Adopting a similar structure\, Hayes invites participants to reflect on their experiences of desire\, identity\, community\, activism\, and survival—modeling listening and dialogue as radical tools for intergenerational connection and collective understanding. As LGBTQ+ lives come under increasing political fire\, Ricerche: four is an insistent reminder of the galvanizing force of shared testimony and the mobilizing potential of community.
