SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: May 23 Sex and Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:It’s IML weekend\, and to commemorate this week is all about the ways Queer people use sex to rebel. Lauren Berlant and Michael Warner argue that society’s insistence on keeping sex private and personal perpetuates the idea that straight\, cishet lives are the norm. So this week we’re going to explore the ways that queer lives were made public in the past. Learn about Cruising in the 1870s\, Lesbian hangouts from prohibition that revolutionized Jazz\, and the first major protest against Anita Bryant\, along with other sexy sites of Queer joy from the past.\nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. Tours are conducted by Daniel Williams\, a political science professor who’s been bringing the details of Chicago’s queer past to life on social media. Follow him on Instagram @Daniel.Edward.Williams \nWhen: Saturday\, May 23\, 1 pm\nStart: Bank of America Building Plaza (110 N Wacker Dr on the North Side)\nEnd: 2nd Story Bar (157 E Ohio St #2)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nAll walking tours are free\, with tips gratefully accepted\, but not expected.

SUMMARY:Sunday Reading Series: Riva Lehrer
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Literary Hall of Fame’s been invited to help curate the May edition of Sunday Reading Series: Poetry\, Prose\, & Cocktails. Host Kenyatta Rogers will be there to lead the program\, but Simone Muench has to miss this one. The program will be at the Hungry Brain on Sunday\, May 17. Noa Micaela Fields\, Tsehaye Geralyn Hébert\, and Riva Lehrer will read–all three authors have used their disabilities as artistic explorations and also advocated for awareness and accessibility. \nNoa Micaela Fields is an echodeviant enjambment queen (translation: trans poet with hearing aids) in search of the hypervivid in her one and only captionless life. No worries\, she’ll write the captions herself. She is the author of E (Nightboat Books\, 2026)\, an alterbook embracing the glitch of mishearing as a subversive technology of transformation. This spring\, poems from the book are on view at the Palais de Tokyo\, Paris. Born in California\, she now lives in Chicago\, where she curates public programs at the Poetry Foundation and edits poetry for Chrysalis\, a literary magazine by and for trans youth. \nTsehaye Geralyn Hébert is a nationally acclaimed citizen playwright and cultural architect whose work nuances and centers the African American experience. Hébert’s civic engagement catalyzes the move towards and beyond ADA compliance\, from idea to full inclusion and accessibility. As Community Lead\, she worked with Illinois Institute of Technology (IT) students to develop innovations in accessible and inclusive theatre. Currently\, her work with Artists Design the Future (ADtF) explores affordable accessible\, and inclusive Work Live spaces owned and designed by artists\, creatives\, and entrepreneurs. With Disability Lead (ADA 25 Advancing Leadership)\, she sat on its Program Committee\, and serves as an ambassador; as well as a current ambassador and recent member of The Cultural Collaborative (Chicago Cultural Accessibility Coalition) steering committee. A former president of the African American Arts Alliance\, she sits on the honorary board of Piven Theatre Workshop\, and volunteers with local and national arts organizations. \nRiva Lehrer is an artist\, writer and curator who focuses on the socially challenged body. She is best known for representations of people whose physical embodiment\, sexuality\, or gender identity have long been stigmatized. Riva’s work has been seen in venues including the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian\, Yale University\, the United Nations\, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington\, DC\, the Arnot Museum\, the DeCordova Museum\, the Frye Museum\, the Chicago Cultural Center\, and the State of Illinois Museum. Awards include the 2017 3Arts MacDowell Fellowship for writing\, 2015 3Arts Residency Fellowship at the University of Illinois; the 2014 Carnegie Mellon Fellowship at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges; the 2009 Prairie Fellowship at the Ragdale Foundation. Her memoir\, Golem Girl\, was published in October 2020. Riva is on faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and instructor in the Medical Humanities Departments of Northwestern University.

SUMMARY:Rooted in Place: Indigenous Stories and the Craft of Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Founded as the nation’s first Native American woman-owned craft brewery\, Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. is redefining what beer can represent – connecting contemporary brewing to Indigenous ingredients\, ancestral foodways\, and relationships to land.\nEvery beer begins with the land and the stories tied to it. This one-night conversation brings together leading voices in brewing and Indigenous studies to explore how ingredients\, place\, and heritage shape more than just what’s in your glass. At the center is a powerful question: how do relationships to land and history influence the way beer is made—and who gets to tell those stories? \nFeaturing Shyla Sheppard and Missy Begay of Bow & Arrow Brewing (partners in business and life)\, the discussion highlights a contemporary Native business perspective rooted in Indigenous ingredients\, ancestral foodways\, and relationships to land. Their work demonstrates how brewing can reconnect people with regional ingredients and traditional knowledge systems while remaining fully engaged with modern craft brewing. Just as importantly\, Bow & Arrow uses beer as a platform for storytelling and myth-busting\, often challenging outdated perceptions and demonstrating that Native cultures and Native entrepreneurship are vibrant\, innovative\, and active today. \nMatt Gallagher of Suncatcher Brewing offers a complementary lens grounded in local agriculture and collaboration. His approach reflects a growing movement in craft brewing—one that reconnects beer to farmers\, grain\, and hops\, and rethinks brewing as a relationship to place rather than just a product. \nModerated by Madison Bastress\, Director of the D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies at the Newberry Library\, the conversation draws on Indigenous history and public scholarship to guide a broader discussion of stewardship\, storytelling\, and thoughtful\, responsible engagement with land and culture. \nThis event also marks the first time Bow & Arrow beer will be available in Chicago or anywhere east of the Mississippi River.

SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: Police\, Gangsters\, and Gay Bars
DESCRIPTION:The University of Chicago sociologist Ernest Burgess observed that the city contains “zones of transition” that sat between areas of the city with clearly defined purposes and which people often used for activities which society frown upon. These areas were often the places that fomented queer culture in the industrial city – but that required an interaction between queerness and other criminal behavior. Learn about the interaction between queerness\, the state’s monopoly on legitimate violence\, and organized crime as we investigate the delicate negotiations and compromises required to keep queer institutions open in the city in the 20th century. \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. Tours are conducted by Daniel Williams\, a political science professor who’s been bringing the details of Chicago’s queer past to life on social media. \nFollow him on Instagram @Daniel.Edward.Williams\nAll walking tours are free\, with tips gratefully accepted\, but not expected.

SUMMARY:Transquake: Hosted by Beyond X&Y
DESCRIPTION:A scientific celebration of trans joy – because baby\, we were born this way. \nIt’s time to shake things up with a TRANSQUAKE! Join us on DNA Day to celebrate the launch of Beyond X&Y\, a new educational advocacy org dedicated to fighting transphobia with the power of science and trans joy. \nThis science-themed variety hour highlights amazing local trans\, non-binary\, and queer performers\, including: \nComedians Talia Clay & LT\nDrag performances by eRiS\, Luxury D. Temptation\, Athena Red\, and Supermarket\nTalk & “experiment” with the founder of Beyond X&Y\, Dr. Jey the Science They\nCategory is: DNgAy! We encourage you to wear something celebrating DNA\, science\, or trans pride. \nMore about Beyond X&Y: \nBeyond X&Y was founded by Dr. Jey McCreight (they/he)\, a trans Genomics PhD\, science communicator\, and local Chicagoan. Our mission is to mobilize biomedical experts and allies to fight unscientific propaganda around “biological sex” that is used to attack trans and intersex people. Because we trust the real science\, and we know biology isn’t binary. \nJey accidentally kickstarted their communication career back in 2010\, with the viral moment of “Boobquake.” When a cleric claimed immodestly dressed women caused earthquakes\, Jey thought\, “Let’s test that!” That experience taught a valuable lesson: You need humor\, storytelling\, and whimsy to communicate – not just facts. \nYour attendance will help Dr. Jey test an important new hypothesis: Is trans joy as powerful as the right fears? Will our gender-bending magic cause an earthquake under Mar-a-Lago? Are Jey’s powers gone after top surgery\, or amplified? We’ll see!

SUMMARY:Q Salon: Common Threads & What We Want
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce our March Q Salon will be Tuesday\, March 24! This month we will be picking up where we left off with a discussion around the common threads that bring us together under the Democratic coalition and what exactly it is that we want out of our politics. \nWhy are we talking about this? It’s simple. If we can’t articulate what we want\, we can’t work to make it happen. And\, if anyone should decide what the Democratic party and progressive politics should stand for\, it should be us\, the people\, not anyone else. \nFor this month’s salon\, we’ll gather at the Center On Halsted (3656 N. Halsted). Doors will open at 6pm and we’ll get started at 6:30pm. \nBring your friends and see you there!

SUMMARY:James Baldwin's Another Country [x] Harsh Readers Circle
DESCRIPTION:Set in the “bohemian” milieux of late 1950s New York (Harlem and Greenwich Village) and France\, James Baldwin’s Another Country is underpinned by themes of 20th-century Black American life\, music\, sexuality\, gender\, and freedom in expatriation. This 1962 novel\, perhaps not as well known as his other writing\, deals with the way race and sexuality impact a cadre of “artistic” men and women\, their intimate relationships\, growth as people\, success\, and artistic lives. (There will be cute snacks at this gathering.) \nThe Harsh Readers Circle meets the third Saturday of every month except December. DESCRIPTION:Dai Minenger\, a Black trans man\, DJ\, and University of Illinois alum with a degree in Music Technology\, is releasing Transcend—a 365-day planner created to affirm and support trans-identifying people. SUMMARY:CENSORSHIP and related acts of authoritarian desperation
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to register for an upcoming public conversation hosted by the DePaul Humanities Center as part of this year’s Present Tense Series. \nOn Thursday\, February 26\, we will host CENSORSHIP\, a conversation exploring censorship as a persistent issue affecting culture\, politics\, academic discourse\, and public expression. This event is presented by the DHC as part of DePaul’s “Present TENSE” series\, which provides space to think about and talk through political and social changes against the backdrop of history. \nSpeakers include: \nMichael Berry\nUCLA professor specializing in contemporary Chinese literature\, film\, and cultural politics in a global context. \nSarah Schulman\nNorthwestern professor\, writer\, and cultural critic\, whose work examines power\, scapegoating\, and public memory. \nBrenda Azucena Muñoz Yáñez\nA communication researcher at Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila focused on digital media and cultural analysis. \nThe Present Tense Series highlights conversations that address urgent questions of our moment and explores how the humanities help us understand and respond to them. This event continues that mission by asking who controls speech\, whose voices are silenced\, and why censorship matters now.

She will be joined by a distinguished panel that includes award winning female vocalist Lucy Smith; musician Shawn Wallace; theatre director Ron OJ Parson; visual artists and gallery owners Andre and Francis Guichard\, Emmy nominee and founder of Black Film Magazine Creative Cypher Troy Pryor; and Joel Hall Dancers & Center Executive Director Joseph Pindelski. \nAs national funding for the arts\, especially the minority arts\, is being reduced\, demeaned\, ignored\, and almost erased\, and following BACA’s mission and purpose\, “to increase interaction\, communication and development of black arts organizations and artists\, while delivering programs that increase their visibility\, marketability\, stability\, and sustainability\,” Town Halls and Panel Discussions\, like this one\, support Chicago’s arts organizations\, and in turn\, our artists.
