DESCRIPTION:The LGBTQ+ Intergenerational Dialogue Project\, Gerber/Hart Library & Archives and Dorothy Downstairs are partnering to bring the younger and older generations together in dialogue about queerness over time. \nJoin us for a panel discussion with Betty Akins\, Jay Myers\, Jocye Fernandes\, and Norma Seledon\, four incredible LGBTQ+ elders\, moderated by Dialogue Project co-founder Karen Morris and hosted by Gerber/Hart volunteer Kaitlyn Griffith. \nThe panel will be accompanied by a pop-up display of materials from Gerber/Hart’s LGBTQ+ library & archives and followed by Q&A & mingling. Celebrate Pride in community with our elders at Dorothy! \nDoors at 6pm and our panel kicks off at 7pm. SUMMARY:Walk With Pride: A Tour of Springfield's LGBTQ+ History
DESCRIPTION:This Pride Month\, join us at Lincoln Library for a free walking tour of historic LGBTQ+ sites in Downtown Springfield. From Ethel Mars to Smokey’s Den to The Prairie Flame to PrideFest\, we have a lot to be proud of. Come see Springfield through rainbow-colored glasses! \nThe total distance will be a little under 2 miles\, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. There will be a few opportunities to take a short rest and water break\, but the walk will last between an hour and 90 minutes total. Questions are encouraged. \nMeet in the library atrium at the starting time. We will not cancel if there is light rain\, but we will cancel if there is heavy rain or storms. Keep an eye out for an email in case of inclement weather! \nRegistration is required for this event\, but it will be offered multiple times. The same information will also be presented at an indoor\, seated program on June 6 and 27 (see “We’ve Always Been Here”).

DESCRIPTION:In 1948 the Chicago Tribune reported that Capt. John J. Walsh was cracking down on gay bars in the River North neighborhood. Walsh insisted that the bar owners remove any coverings on the windows of the bars so the cops could observe what was going on inside. This insistence of observation recalls what Michel Foucault called “panopticonism\,” a way that the state exerts control by ensuring that everyone knows they can be observed at any time.
