SUMMARY:Black Futures: Community Meets the Moment\, panel and mixer
DESCRIPTION:This event is intended to create space for honest dialogue about the uncertainty\, tension\, and systemic pressures many across the Black community (LGBTQ+ and allied) are currently navigating. Rather than prescribing a singular political viewpoint or response\, our discussion aims to explore how individuals and communities sustain one another through periods of social strain\, cultural division\, and personal vulnerability. We see this as an opportunity for reflection\, grounding\, and connection—encouraging attendees to consider the role they can play in fostering safety\, belonging\, and care within their own communities and networks as well as expanding Center on Halsted’s demographic and geographic reach. \nThis event is in partnership with Queer Connections: Men of Color & Allies. \nFirst 30 registrations will come with a single drink ticket. Young adults below the age of 21 will be wrist banded.

SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: AFABs and Femmes
DESCRIPTION:The Historian John D’Emilio argues that queer women’s social spaces and practices developed in very different ways to queer men’s because of decreased access to capital\, social power\, and public space. That difference often obscures the lives of queer women in the historic record. This week we’ll work to uncover the contributions of women\, fems\, and AFABs to Chicago Queer history. Follow in the steps of artists\, lawyers\, performers\, and gender creatives who called Chicago home and helped shaped the city we live in today. \nWhen: Saturday\, June 7\, 1 pm\nStart: Fountain of the Great Lakes\, South Garden of the Art Institute of Chicago (111 S Michigan Ave)\nEnd: 2nd Story Bar (157 E Ohio St #2)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: June 27: The First Chicago Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:On June 27\, 1970 Chicago’s Gay Liberation Front organized the world’s first ever Pride Parade. The unpermitted parade was originally planned to start in Washington Square Park and end at the Chicago Water Tower\, but the 150 or so marchers spontaneously extended the route down Michigan Ave\, ending at Civic Center Plaza in the shadow of City Hall – followed by 8 police cars and 2 paddy wagons. Fifty-six years later\, join me as we recreate the route and learn about some of the Chicago Queer History along the way. \nTime: Saturday\, June 27\, 1 pm\nStart: Washington Square Park (Bughouse Square) 901 N Clark St\nEnd: Daley Plaza (50 W Washington St)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. SUMMARY:Super Sapphic V
DESCRIPTION:The Midwest’s largest party for sapphics\, dykes\, lesbians and their friends returns with a BANG the Friday of Pride Weekend with another all-building Metro/smartbar takeover. \nOnce upon a time\, Chicago lesbian circuit parties were attended by the thousands. Now that we’ve revived that culture with Super Sapphic\, we’ve built a lineup that crosses generations\, communities and creative styles because legacy builds on legacy. This year\, Old Gold will open the evening with Auntie Hours featuring all-vinyl sets by the Good Girls and performances by Darling Shear. \nIt’s important to us that the women who were actually on the dance floor of the legendary events of the 90s and 2000s that paved the way for Super Sapphic have a place on ours. If you’re over 30 (but especially if you’re over 40!)\, we want to see you shake your thang! We’re getting the party started at 9pm but don’t underestimate how late you might find yourself twirling away… \nOnline tickets are on sale NOW and will absolutely sell out. Secure yours and save the date!

SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: June 20 Dive Keepers on North Clark Get Warnings
DESCRIPTION:In 1948 the Chicago Tribune reported that Capt. John J. Walsh was cracking down on gay bars in the River North neighborhood. Walsh insisted that the bar owners remove any coverings on the windows of the bars so the cops could observe what was going on inside. This insistence of observation recalls what Michel Foucault called “panopticonism\,” a way that the state exerts control by ensuring that everyone knows they can be observed at any time. This walking tour covers the sites Walsh visited with his warnings and tells the stories of what happened before\, and after the crackdown. \nTime: Saturday June 20\, 1 pm\nStart: Chicago Water Tower (801 N Michigan Ave)\nEnd: 2nd Story Bar (157 E Ohio St #2)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. DESCRIPTION:The Historian John D’Emilio observed that the rise of the industrial city in the 19th century created the conditions that allowed queer community to form. DESCRIPTION:MASPALOMAS is a luminous\, sensual drama set in the sun-drenched freedom of Gran Canaria\, where desire\, reinvention\, and queer community flourish in open defiance of age and expectation. The next Chicago premiere from the QUEER EXPRESSION FILM FESTIVAL\, the film offers a rare and deeply moving portrait of queer life later in life. \nAt its center is a 76-year-old man who has built a world defined by pleasure\, independence\, and self-expression—embracing the rhythms of Maspalomas with unapologetic vitality. But when that fragile sense of freedom is disrupted\, the past he once escaped begins to close in. Family ties\, buried truths\, and unresolved histories resurface\, forcing him to confront not only where he came from\, but who he still has the courage to be. \nCritics have praised the film’s emotional honesty and sensuality\, highlighting its tender\, unflinching look at desire and aging\, and its refusal to look away from the complexities of queer identity later in life. The performances—especially by José Ramón Soroiz—have been noted for their depth and vulnerability\, grounding the film in a lived-in authenticity that resonates long after the final scene. \nWhat unfolds is both intimate and expansive: a story of longing\, resilience\, and the radical act of choosing oneself—again and again. At once sensual and deeply human\, MASPALOMAS explores the complexities of identity across generations\, asking what it truly means to live authentically when time\, memory\, and desire collide.

SUMMARY:The John Waters Screenplays: A Reading and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and career-spanning conversation with legendary filmmaker and writer John Waters as he celebrates the new reissue of his classic early screenplays. In true icon fashion\, the reading will feature Waters voicing each and every part from a scene in one of his screenplays. \nFrom the transgressive Pink Flamingos to the joy of Hairspray — later a Tony Award-winning musical — Waters redefined independent cinema in the ’70s and ’80s with his singular blend of shock and wit. More than a filmmaker\, Waters is a literary provocateur whose humor challenged every boundary of taste and convention. This conversation explores his journey from young Baltimore filmmaker to the undisputed king of cult cinema\, honoring six of his reissued screenplays: Multiple Maniacs\, Pink Flamingos\, Female Trouble\, Desperate Living\, Flamingos Forever\, and Hairspray. \nPlus\, enter for a chance to read on stage at the event with John Waters when you purchase tickets. \nA signing will follow this event.

SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: Police\, Gangsters\, and Gay Bars
DESCRIPTION:The University of Chicago sociologist Ernest Burgess observed that the city contains “zones of transition” that sat between areas of the city with clearly defined purposes and which people often used for activities which society frown upon. These areas were often the places that fomented queer culture in the industrial city – but that required an interaction between queerness and other criminal behavior. Learn about the interaction between queerness\, the state’s monopoly on legitimate violence\, and organized crime as we investigate the delicate negotiations and compromises required to keep queer institutions open in the city in the 20th century. \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026.
