SUMMARY:Bowie Ball - David Bowie’s 79th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Chicago it is time to experience Bowie Ball\, where we celebrate the legend\, the chameleon\, and the man… David Bowie. \nBowie Ball is being held on Saturday\, Jan 3rd 2026 to celebrate the life and legend of David Bowie on what would have been his 79th Birthday. So get into the spirit with us – glam it up\, dress like a dandy and let’s love the alien with some glitter on top. \nBowie Ball is a glam and drag dance party founded in Chicago by DJ Heaven Malone. Bowie Ball is on Saturday\, January 3rd\, 2026 in Chicago. Bowie Ball 2016 on David Bowie’s Birthday celebrated Bowie’s last studio album “Blackstar” and unfortunately we later learned\, his passing into stardust. Bowie Ball 2015 coincided with the end of “David Bowie Is”\, the multimedia exhibition on one of the most influential and iconic artists of our time – David Bowie. For Bowie Ball 2014\, even David Bowie tweeted and posted about our incredibly extravagant and packed partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art to announce their David Bowie Is exhibition. Bowie Ball 2013 came with the surprise announcement that after 10 years of silence\, a brand new album titled “The Next Day” was being released.

SUMMARY:LoveFest with the Chicago Black Gay Mens Caucus
DESCRIPTION:LoveFest is our invitation to community to slow down\, exhale\, and recenter your pleasure. Inspired by Janet Jackson’s The Pleasure Principle\, this year’s theme\, The Pleasure Principle\, was born from a desire to create something soft\, sexy\, and intentional — a vibe made specifically for the Black queer community. \nExpect a full day of experiences designed to help you explore physical pleasure\, sexual health\, intentional cannabis consumption\, as well as conscious consumption of other substances and curated cocktail workshops. This event reminds us that pleasure is not a luxury — it’s essential to the wellbeing of Black gay\, bisexual\, and same-gender-loving men in Chicago.

SUMMARY:World AIDS Day commemoration with Wrightwood 659 and the Joffrey Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Wrightwood 659 and The Joffrey Ballet proudly announce a special World AIDS Day commemoration honoring those lost to the epidemic to be held at Wrightwood 659 (659 Wrightwood Avenue) Thursday\, December 4\, at 5:30pm. World AIDS Day\, officially December 1\, is a global movement to unite people in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Since 1988\, communities have stood together on World AIDS Day to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma and to remember lives lost. \nThe Joffrey Ballet was deeply affected during this period\, losing several remarkable artists\, including Company Founder Robert Joffrey at age 59 and his protégé Edward Stierle at just 23. Following Joffrey’s passing\, Stierle choreographed Lacrymosa and\, while on his own deathbed\, completed Empyrean. As noted in a New York Times interview\, Stierle’s dance partner observed\, “Where Lacrymosa was about death\, Empyrean is about celebration and hope.” \nThis public program will feature opening remarks by Greg Cameron\, Joffrey Ballet President & CEO; a screening of Empyrean and discussion; and a memorial segment inviting attendees to share reflections and memories of those lost to AIDS.  Tickets for this special program are complimentary with paid admission to Wrightwood 659. \nWrightwood 659 is currently mounting The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S.\, a large-scale exhibition celebrating the rich history of The Joffrey Ballet. The exhibition premiered at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in 2024\, marking the first major retrospective of the company. Drawing from the Joffrey archive\, acquired by the Jerome Robbins Dance Division in 2017 as the Library’s largest acquisition in a decade\, the exhibition offers an in-depth look at the Joffrey’s contributions to ballet in the U.S. Highlights include rare film from the original performance of the groundbreaking ballet Astarte and Anna Sokolow’s Opus 65\, as well as costumes\, props\, pointe shoes\, posters\, correspondence\, and other ephemera from the company and the life of Robert Joffrey. The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S. is organized by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and curated by Dr. Julia Foulkes with assistance from Nicole Duffy. It is presented at Wrightwood 659 by Alphawood Exhibitions. \n  \nAlso on view at Wrightwood 659 through December 20\, 2025\, are Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, which examines the legacy of Scott Burton (1939–1989)\, an American original whose wide-ranging practice anticipated many of the strategies of today’s art; and Ellen Altfest: Forever\, an intimate selection of oil paintings by the American representational painter.

She is Artistic Director of StoryStudio Chicago. \nDeep into her fourth career\, Victoria Noe is a Chicago-based award-winning author\, speaker and activist with two degrees in theater. Her Friend Grief series – the result of a promise she made to a dying friend – recognizes the importance of friendships in shaping our lives and illuminates an often disrespected form of grief. Noe’s long-time HIV/AIDS activism then led her to write F*g Hags\, Divas and Moms: The Legacy of Straight Women in the AIDS Community\, the groundbreaking book that honors the women who changed the course of the epidemic. Her 2023 book\, What Our Friends Left Behind: Grief and Laughter in a Pandemic\, shares the challenges faced by people who grieved a friend during COVID. With Unstoppable: Straight Women on the AIDS Frontlines\, Noe shares more stories of women in the HIV/AIDS community\, and how they’re responding to the shock and awe of 2025.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Erik Piepenburg with Monica Eng
DESCRIPTION:Join author and New York Times journalist\, Erik Piepenburg for a conversation about his latest book\, Dining Out: First Dates\, Defiant Nights\, and Last Call Disco Fries at America’s Gay Restaurants! Erik will be in conversation with Chicago reporter\, Monica Eng! \nFrom a New York Times journalist\, a culinary tour of gay restaurants—their history\, and how they evolved as a space of safety and celebration for the LGBTQ+ community—full of joy\, sex\, sorrow\, activism\, and nostalgia. \nDining Out explores how gay people came of age\, came out\, and fought for their rights not just in gay bars or the streets\, but in restaurants. From cruisy urban cafeterias of the 1920s to mom-and-pop diners that fed the Stonewall generation to the intersectional hotspots of the early 21st century. Using archival material\, original reporting and interviews\, and first-person accounts\, Erik Piepenburg explores how LGBTQ restaurants shaped and continue to shape generations of gay Americans. \nThrough the eyes of a reporter and the stomach of a hungry gay man\, Dining Out examines the rise\, impact and legacies of the nation’s gay restaurants past\, present\, and future\, connecting meals with memories. Hamburger Mary’s\, Florent\, a suburban Denny’s queered by kids: Piepenburg explores how these and many other gay restaurants\, coffee shops\, diners\, and unconventional eateries have charted queer placemaking and changed the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement for the better.
