SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: June 13 Public and Private Queerness
DESCRIPTION:The Historian John D’Emilio observed that the rise of the industrial city in the 19th century created the conditions that allowed queer community to form. For the first time in modernity\, queer people could separate their public and private lives and begin to gather together to form queer culture. We’ll explore a gay gangster\, the mysterious disappearance of a federal judge\, a pre-prohibition drag bar and much more. \nWhen: Saturday\, June 13\, 1 pm\nStart: Chicago Water Tower (801 N Michigan Ave)\nEnd: Chicago Water Tower (801 N Michigan Ave)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. Tours are conducted by Daniel Williams\, a political science professor who’s been bringing the details of Chicago’s queer past to life on social media. SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: June 20 Dive Keepers on North Clark Get Warnings
DESCRIPTION:In 1948 the Chicago Tribune reported that Capt. John J. Walsh was cracking down on gay bars in the River North neighborhood. Walsh insisted that the bar owners remove any coverings on the windows of the bars so the cops could observe what was going on inside. This insistence of observation recalls what Michel Foucault called “panopticonism\,” a way that the state exerts control by ensuring that everyone knows they can be observed at any time. This walking tour covers the sites Walsh visited with his warnings and tells the stories of what happened before\, and after the crackdown. \nTime: Saturday June 20\, 1 pm\nStart: Chicago Water Tower (801 N Michigan Ave)\nEnd: 2nd Story Bar (157 E Ohio St #2)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026. SUMMARY:Super Sapphic V
DESCRIPTION:The Midwest’s largest party for sapphics\, dykes\, lesbians and their friends returns with a BANG the Friday of Pride Weekend with another all-building Metro/smartbar takeover. \nOnce upon a time\, Chicago lesbian circuit parties were attended by the thousands. Now that we’ve revived that culture with Super Sapphic\, we’ve built a lineup that crosses generations\, communities and creative styles because legacy builds on legacy. This year\, Old Gold will open the evening with Auntie Hours featuring all-vinyl sets by the Good Girls and performances by Darling Shear. \nIt’s important to us that the women who were actually on the dance floor of the legendary events of the 90s and 2000s that paved the way for Super Sapphic have a place on ours. If you’re over 30 (but especially if you’re over 40!)\, we want to see you shake your thang! We’re getting the party started at 9pm but don’t underestimate how late you might find yourself twirling away… \nOnline tickets are on sale NOW and will absolutely sell out. Secure yours and save the date!

SUMMARY:Chicago Queer History Walking Tours: AFABs and Femmes
DESCRIPTION:The Historian John D’Emilio argues that queer women’s social spaces and practices developed in very different ways to queer men’s because of decreased access to capital\, social power\, and public space. That difference often obscures the lives of queer women in the historic record. This week we’ll work to uncover the contributions of women\, fems\, and AFABs to Chicago Queer history. Follow in the steps of artists\, lawyers\, performers\, and gender creatives who called Chicago home and helped shaped the city we live in today. \nWhen: Saturday\, June 7\, 1 pm\nStart: Fountain of the Great Lakes\, South Garden of the Art Institute of Chicago (111 S Michigan Ave)\nEnd: 2nd Story Bar (157 E Ohio St #2)\nDistance: apx 2 miles \nThe University of Illinois Chicago Gender and Sexuality Center presents a series of Chicago Queer History Walking Tours for Summer 2026.
