SUMMARY:Third Wednesday: playOUT! Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Spilling the Tea is a vibrant chamber music experience presented by playOUT! that celebrates the intersection of LGBTQ+ Pride and Black musical traditions\, both honored in June. This program brings these parallel celebrations into an artistic dialogue\, centering the work of Black queer composers who are shaping a new classical canon. Featuring contemporary string quartet works by Damien Geter and Shelley Washington alongside a newly crafted medley of beloved anthems from both traditions\, Spilling the Tea explores themes of identity\, protest\, spiritual grounding\, visibility\, and joy. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, with donations gratefully accepted in support of continued cultural programming. \n— \nplayOUT! is a Chicago-based non-profit organization amplifying queer voices in classical music. Founded by cellist David Sands in 2018\, the movement began as storytelling performances highlighting queer composers and has grown into a dynamic movement in citizen artistry. Our mission is to celebrate LGBTQIA+ artistry in classical music and foster a cultural landscape where queer voices are heard and honored. We donate 25% of concert proceeds to organizations aligned with our values of equity\, inclusion\, and artistic empowerment\, including The People’s Music School\, Center on Halsted\, Allegrezza Singers\, and Sound Mind.

SUMMARY:Nervous Breakdown in G Minor
DESCRIPTION:How do you pursue an art form you love when you no longer feel you belong? In this solo show with live music\, Lewis Rawlinson traces his journey through queerness\, addiction and mental health. Nervous Breakdown in G Minor is a lyrical autobiography about growing up Mormon in Montana\, training as a classical cellist and confronting the realities of pursuing a life in music. \nLewis interweaves storytelling with a live performance of a four-movement cello sonata\, a turbulent work that mirrors his path from discovery and joy through doubt and collapse to rebirth. The result is a raw exploration of identity and a reclamation of narrative—seeking a more honest\, and ultimately universal\, connection to music. \nNervous Breakdown in G Minor recently completed a critically acclaimed run at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. The show was also the recipient of a 2023 Chicago DCASE Grant and was performed at The Den Theatre and Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre. \nTHE ARTISTS \nWritten and performed by Lewis Rawlinson\nPiano performed by Mo Xo\nDirected by Stephanie Rogers\nDeveloped with Arlene Malinowski
