SUMMARY:No Kings Protest - Hands Off Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Here in Chicago we know how to rise up\, fight back\, and support each other. It is more important than ever that we do that together on October 18th as we show the nation and the world that Chicago is united in opposing these illegal and unnecessary attacks against our neighbors\, our communities\, and our democracy. Our actions and resistance are necessary as Trump sends militarized agents into our communities\, silences voters and voices\, and hands billionaires giveaways while families struggle. This isn’t just politics. It’s democracy versus dictatorship. We won’t accept a wannabe king\, and we won’t back down in the face of chaos\, corruption\, and cruelty. Join us in Chicago on October 18th as we join millions of people across the country in a national day of action to declare: No Kings and Hands Off Chicago! \nThis event is being organized by the Hands Off Chicago Coalition (Chicago Federation of Labor\, Equality Illinois\, Indivisible Chicago\, Personal PAC\, Sierra Club Illinois); ACLU of Illinois; and a growing number of partner organizations.

SUMMARY:Books on the Chopping Block
DESCRIPTION:Multiple Dates \nBanned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September\, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States. \nBooks on the Chopping Block is our annual 60-minute performance of dramatic readings of short excerpts taken from these books. City Lit has teamed up with the ALA in celebration of Banned Books Week since 2006\, performing at special events\, libraries and bookstores in and around Chicago… and virtually this year. \nCity Lit Executive Artistic Director Brian Pastor says\, “The freedom to read is essential to a civilized society. For many marginalized communities\, the freedom to read represents the freedom to be themselves. City Lit is proud to continue its BOOKS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK program at a time when attempts at book banning are at an all-time high. We are pleased to ally ourselves with the American Library Association in this important work.” \nAll the books in the list are available from your local library and to buy from Bookshop.org (if you click on the books below and buy copies City Lit gets a small cut!). \nMonday\, October 6th\, 2025\nDePaul Theatre School\, Lobby 11:30-1:30pm\n2350 N Racine Ave.\,\nChicago\, IL 60614 \nTuesday\, October 7th\, 2025\nWilmette Public Library: 6:30pm\n1242 Wilmette Ave.\,\nWilmette\, IL 60091 \nWednesday\, October 8th\, 2025\nNorthbrook Public Library. 7:00pm.\n1201 Cedar Lane\,\nNorthbrook\, IL \nSaturday\, October 11th\, 2025\nEdgewater Library Branch. 2:00pm.\n6000 N Broadway\,\nChicago\, IL 60660

SUMMARY:Sharon Hayes: RICERCHE: FOUR
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed artist Sharon Hayes presents Ricerche: four\, an expansive and deeply moving two-channel video composed from interviews with LGBTQ+ elders across the United States. The final installment in her decade-long series exploring sexuality and gender in the US\, the work draws inspiration from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1963 film Comizi d’Amore (Love Meetings)\, in which the filmmaker interviewed Italians about their shifting views on sex and sexuality. Adopting a similar structure\, Hayes invites participants to reflect on their experiences of desire\, identity\, community\, activism\, and survival—modeling listening and dialogue as radical tools for intergenerational connection and collective understanding. As LGBTQ+ lives come under increasing political fire\, Ricerche: four is an insistent reminder of the galvanizing force of shared testimony and the mobilizing potential of community.

SUMMARY:Unite for Trans Youth Lives!
DESCRIPTION:Across Illinois and the nation\, trans youth are under attack. From hospital systems quietly canceling gender-affirming care to state and federal actions undermining protections and shutting down necessary emergency services\, our youth are being systematically stripped of their right to exist\, thrive\, and receive affirming and lifesaving medical and mental health care.\nThis is a state of emergency. Illinois is a sanctuary state\, but even here\, major institutions are walking back care without warning or accountability. These decisions leave families in crisis and send a dangerous message: that trans lives are disposable. \n\nJoin us as we take to the streets to demand: \n\nThe immediate restoration and expansion of gender-affirming care for trans youth in Illinois in alignment with the Illinois Human Rights Act and internationally accepted medical recommendations. \n\nA public commitment from elected officials and healthcare providers defending trans youth rights at every level.\nRestoration and future protection of necessary emergency services provided through 988 suicide prevention line for LGBTQ+ youth including the contract with The Trevor Project. \n\nThis is a call to action for trans youth\, families\, providers\, allies\, organizers\, and anyone who refuses to be silent while care is actively taken away from our most vulnerable. \n\nBring your signs\, your voices\, and your rage. This is a fight for trans futures. \n\n Trans youth deserve care.  Trans youth deserve safety.  Trans youth deserve to live.  Trans healthcare is a human right. \n\nEvent is hosted by: Brave Space Alliance\, Chicago Therapy Collective\, Equality Illinois\, and Trans Up Front IL\nPlease direct endorsements and volunteer requests to: outreach@transupfrontil.com
