SUMMARY:Queer Letters to America
DESCRIPTION:Letters to America is a citywide letter-writing project to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. Chicagoans are invited to reflect on their lives\, communities and experiences in Chicago and how those stories connect to a broader American story. Queer Letters to America seeks to preserve the perspectives of LGBTQ+ Chicagoans specifically at a moment of historical upheaval and to resist their erasure from the historical record. \nThe letters collected during this program will become part of a permanent archival collection at Chicago Public Library’s Northside Neighborhood History Center\, safeguarding queer voices for future generations. \nDrop by Fathom any time during the program to write your letter. SUMMARY:Goles-Glikn - Queer Yiddish Theater
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC-based GLYK\, a aueer Yiddish theater collective\, for a show that asks: What’s an authentic Jew and how do you become one? What’s the relation between art and life\, representation and reproduction? And what the **** are we doing in Chicago? This show will feature excerpts from Sholem Asch’s marranage melodrama Maranen and Paula R.’s (Prilutski) high-art send-up Aktor. \nRooted in the tradition of kleynkunst\, an early 20th century Yiddish theater mode attempting to overcome the distinctions between amateur/professional\, art/life\, and audience/performer\, GLYK weaves our 21st century queer sensibility through patchwork performances featuring short scenes\, poems\, and songs. \nDoors open at 6:30. Show at 7:00pm. Run time is approximately 75 minutes with no intermission. \nTickets are free but required\, and we invite you to pay what you can for them to support GLYK and Chicago YIVO.

SUMMARY:Tin Drum Theatre Company Presents “Southern Rapture”\, June 11 - 28 at Theater Wit
DESCRIPTION:Tin Drum Theatre Company is proud to announce the cast and creative team for the Chicago premiere of Southern Rapture at Theater Wit\, 1229 W. Belmont Ave.\, June 11 – 28\, written by Eric Coble and directed by Jason Palmer.\nIn the heart of the Bible Belt\, a local theatre company announces it will stage a play called Rapture in America—complete with seven seconds of male nudity—sending the city into a frenzy. Based on actual events\, Eric Coble’s Southern Rapture turns this civic eruption into a wickedly funny satire about artistic freedom\, arts funding\, the weaponization of civic institutions and what happens when conviction outruns common sense.\nOriginally commissioned by Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte\, Southern Rapture draws directly from one of the city’s most explosive cultural battles. In 1996\, Charlotte Repertory Theatre announced a production of Angels in America.. The district attorney attempted to bring criminal charges\, however\, emergency court injunctions required the show to open. “Good Morning America” broadcast a train-wreck debate\, turning a local arts dispute into a national spectacle.\nEighteen months later\, county commissioners retaliated by slashing $2.5 million in arts funding\, destabilizing organizations across the city. Although much of that funding was later restored\, the interruption sent lasting ripples through Charlotte’s artistic landscape. Charlotte Rep won the Angels battle\, but the controversy produced long-term consequences that cost it the war. Amid donor fatigue\, mounting financial strain and leadership turnover\, the company closed permanently in 2005.\nThe performance schedule is Thursdays – Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets are $30 with $15 student tickets and may be purchased at TinDrumTheatre.com.
