SUMMARY:Love Still Dances: 10 Years After Pulse
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando\, Florida — a tragedy that took the lives of 49 LGBTQ+ people and forever changed our community. \nJoin the Second City Sisters as we gather in remembrance\, reflection\, resistance\, and joy. \nThe evening will begin with a silent processional through Northalsted/Boystown as we honor those we lost and all those impacted by violence against our community. Along the route\, the Sisters will carry Veils of Remembrance & Shame to help release grief\, pain\, and heavy spirits\, alongside Veils of Joy & Blessings meant to spread love\, healing\, laughter\, and hope into the universe. \nFollowing the procession\, we invite the community to continue together in celebration of queer resilience with a traveling dance party and bar crawl through the neighborhood — because joy itself is an act of defiance. \nThe evening will conclude with a final communal blessing\, sending our love\, dancing\, laughter\, and light to the 49 souls lost that tragic night\, and reaffirming our commitment to protecting and uplifting our community today. \nCome walk with us.\nCome dance with us.\nCome remember with us.

SUMMARY:Blue Dress
DESCRIPTION:Blue Dress is a fast-paced queer meta-fantasy that unites Alice from Wonderland and Dorothy from Oz in a shared\, unstable world where familiar rules no longer apply. As they search for a way home\, the two encounter strange characters\, shifting realities\, and growing tensions that challenge how they see themselves and each other. What begins as an adventure becomes something deeper as both are forced to question the roles they’ve been assigned and whether they’re willing to break from them. Blending camp\, comedy\, and emotional honesty\, Blue Dress explores identity\, friendship\, and the courage it takes to define your own story. \nThis show runs Fridays in June at 7:30pm at Annoyance Theatre. 90 minutes.

SUMMARY:SMILEY
DESCRIPTION:Open Space Arts is proud to present SMILEY by Guillem Clua\, a sharp\, funny\, and deeply relatable queer romantic comedy that has captivated audiences around the world. \nOriginally premiering in Barcelona\, SMILEYquickly became a breakout success in Spain\, enjoying extended runs in Barcelona and Madrid and earning widespread acclaim. Since its debut\, the play has been produced internationally across Europe and Latin America\, with productions in Germany\, Italy\, Greece\, Cyprus\, Chile\, Puerto Rico\, Peru\, and beyond. \nWhile SMILEY has become a global audience favorite\, it has had only limited exposure in the United States\, with select Spanish-language productions in New York and Miami. Open Space Arts’ production introduces this internationally celebrated work to Chicago audiences\, offering a fresh opportunity to experience one of the most engaging contemporary queer love stories to emerge from the European stage. \nWhen ÁLEX leaves a voicemail for his ex\, it lands in the inbox of BRUNO—a stranger. What begins as a wrong message turns into an unexpected connection between two very different men. As texts turn into calls\, and calls into something more\, they navigate attraction\, vulnerability\, and the complicated reality of modern love. \nFunny\, fast\, and disarmingly honest\, SMILEYexplores the thrill and risk of connection in a world shaped by screens\, expectations\, and the fear of being truly seen. \nGuillem Clua is one of Spain’s most widely produced contemporary playwrights\, whose work has been staged internationally and translated into multiple languages. His plays\, including SMILEY and THE SWALLOW\, are known for their emotional intelligence\, wit\, and insight into the complexities of human connection. \nOpen Space Arts continues its commitment to bold\, intimate storytelling that centers queer lives and voices with SMILEY\, a play that reflects the company’s ongoing exploration of connection\, identity\, and the evolving nature of love.

SUMMARY:Tin Drum Theatre Company Presents “Southern Rapture”\, June 11 - 28 at Theater Wit
DESCRIPTION:Tin Drum Theatre Company is proud to announce the cast and creative team for the Chicago premiere of Southern Rapture at Theater Wit\, 1229 W. Belmont Ave.\, June 11 – 28\, written by Eric Coble and directed by Jason Palmer.\nIn the heart of the Bible Belt\, a local theatre company announces it will stage a play called Rapture in America—complete with seven seconds of male nudity—sending the city into a frenzy. Based on actual events\, Eric Coble’s Southern Rapture turns this civic eruption into a wickedly funny satire about artistic freedom\, arts funding\, the weaponization of civic institutions and what happens when conviction outruns common sense.\nOriginally commissioned by Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte\, Southern Rapture draws directly from one of the city’s most explosive cultural battles. In 1996\, Charlotte Repertory Theatre announced a production of Angels in America.. The district attorney attempted to bring criminal charges\, however\, emergency court injunctions required the show to open. “Good Morning America” broadcast a train-wreck debate\, turning a local arts dispute into a national spectacle.\nEighteen months later\, county commissioners retaliated by slashing $2.5 million in arts funding\, destabilizing organizations across the city. Although much of that funding was later restored\, the interruption sent lasting ripples through Charlotte’s artistic landscape. Charlotte Rep won the Angels battle\, but the controversy produced long-term consequences that cost it the war. Amid donor fatigue\, mounting financial strain and leadership turnover\, the company closed permanently in 2005.\nThe performance schedule is Thursdays – Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets are $30 with $15 student tickets and may be purchased at TinDrumTheatre.com.
